Interview with USA Today Bestselling author, DC Gomez

Interview conducted by Bianca Rose of Book Notions Mickey Mikkelson has brought DC Gomez and I back together again for this Behind The Book Q&A to discuss her first book which is the beginning of her series called Death’s Intern. DC’s books are on the USA Today Bestsellers List! 

Q: DC welcome back to Book Notions! Would you please give a brief description of Death’s Intern & when the book was released?

A: Thank you so much for having me back. It is truly a pleasure chatting with you and your incredible readership.

Death’s Intern is the journey of Isis Black, Death’s accidental new intern, that gets dropped into a world of magic that she did not know it existed. Unfortunately, while her initial reaction is to avoid the whole situation, and not take the job offer by Death, her only friend gets kidnapped. Isis discovers that the only people that can help her are the ones she was trying to avoid. So, let’s be honest, what would you do for your friends? Isis will work for Death, be trained by a talking cat and joined forces with a boy genius to get her friend back. 

Death’s Intern is available everywhere since it was released back in November 2017.

Q: Where did the ideas for Death’s Intern come from? How long did it take you to write it?

A: The inspiration for Death’s Intern came from a previous project I worked on with my brothers and friends. I had done a short video featuring Death reaping souls at a party. Unfortunately, it turned out that Death was at the wrong location. The story ended with Death saying, “I really need an intern.” That line stuck with me. When I worked on my first novel, that idea came back. Except this time, I wanted to explore the possibility of why Death would need interns. The rest of the world shaped itself around it.

Once the idea and the outline were developed, the writing process went pretty fast. It probably took me around 3 months to complete the novel. I normally spend more time thinking about the project and outlining. 

Q: What emotions and lessons do you hope readers feel and learn once they turn the last page of Death’s Intern? 

A: At the end of the book, besides hoping the reader has enjoyed the action-packed ride, I really hope they feel inspired to with the notion of the found-family. This is something that the main character, Isis, discovers. She finds a home in the most unlikely place with a group of people she never expected. I think this is something we can all relate to. Q: What can readers expect in the sequel to Death’s Intern? How many books will you write in the series?

A: The sequel for Death’s Intern, Plague Unleashed, takes place eight months after the first book. You have a better trained intern, with a more open mind of the supernatural world. Granted, she is now faced with potential zombies in Texarkana. Not only are we introduced to a new supernatural being, we also get to meet the deliciously evil Pestilence. As the series progress, the readers are introduced to more supernatural beings and the rest of the horsemen. You can indulge in the complete series of five novels and three novellas. 

Q: Who is the dream cast to portray your characters in Death’s Intern once Hollywood gets the rights to your books?

A: Honestly, I would love for the talented Ana de Armas to play Isis Black. Death absolutely needs to be done by Jennifer Lopez, with Daniel Craig as Bob, Tom Keen as Erik, and Leo Abelo Perry for Bartholomew. I have been dreaming of these books transitioning to the screen for so many years that pulling a cast together is not even a struggle anymore. I just hope the readers agreed with me.
