Ethical Business Practices and Sustainability Within Healthcare Leadership

Dr. Ra’Sha L. Porter, DHSc, MHA, ACRPM

Incorporating ethics into an organizational structure is vital to the sustainability and the success of any business. Being compliant with ethical business practices gives healthcare entrepreneurs the capability to maintain their own unique advantage in today’s market. Emphasizing positive morale provokes the opportunity to establish a trustworthy reputation in the healthcare industry. However, the most essential aspect of business sustainability in healthcare is being able to construct business relationships that can be nurtured on an ongoing basis. Integrating efficient healthcare leadership within the business itself generates the foundation of instilling appropriate business ethics which becomes the derivative of developing a positive reputation among healthcare stakeholders. Focusing on the general perception of what a positive reputation is among stakeholders in healthcare means embracing the importance of enhancing the quality of life within population health. Healthcare leaders and entrepreneurs could make a profound impact on how healthcare services are rendered. Healthcare innovations enhance the quality of life by analyzing patterns in society that can result in epic solutions to address the most challenging and complex transformations in healthcare. Healthcare leaders are at the forefront of healthcare innovations, and they are at the center of business sustainability. They engage with stakeholders on all healthcare system-levels to address the obstacles of mitigating issues within components of healthcare delivery. Throughout my expertise of being a healthcare leader, I realize that the collaboration of providing timely, efficient, safe, equitable, effective, and patient-centered care increases the overall value of services provided. It also brings forth a unique representation of the ethical business practices put in place by the healthcare leader. Every healthcare entrepreneur must appoint a leader to birth their organization’s vision and mission in order to maintain its value. A healthcare leader implements and oversees the business workflows and streamlined processes to ensure timeliness of care without any discriminating act. This level of responsibility facilitates the development of sustainable innovation in the healthcare sector. Ultimately, the healthcare sector examines the leadership of healthcare businesses and how the administrative operations are interfaced within the ethics of clinical practices.

Different models of healthcare are adapted to identify new methods of improving healthcare delivery throughout population health. This requires healthcare leaders to identify more efficient ways to perform within their roles and still maintain positive morale within the organization’s ethical business practices. As healthcare continues to evolve, new healthcare leaders emerge with innovative paradigms and tactics for addressing gaps in the healthcare system. I have learned that when healthcare leaders are truly passionate and dedicated about their impact within healthcare innovation, they supply themselves with the opportunity to restore health equity. The improvement of health outcomes relies solely on equitable healthcare, thus being the core priority for healthcare leaders. I have also learned that it is imperative for every healthcare leader to have a team, not just any team, but a team full of passionate and dedicated like-minded individuals. My personal experiences have taught me to understand the significance of team building. There are some healthcare professionals that may have negative or toxic attributes in their leadership style, and it pours into their team. Only those that may be fueled to entertain that form of leadership will be motivated to one day, lead in the same direction. It is imperative that healthcare leaders and professionals have a positive approach in how they motivate and inspire their team, because it will influence a more positive impact within the organizational structure.
