Overcoming the Fear of Being On-Camera: How to Present Yourself Confidently in Videos

Simone Bueno

Since 2020, I've been on a mission to empower moms to share their stories through video, inspiring and impacting others along the way. I started by connecting with professional moms and sharing relatable snippets of their journeys. My aim was to unveil how they effectively managed their daily lives while running their businesses.

Despite using words, images, and behind-the-scenes glimpses, a crucial element seemed to be missing – a genuine connection. While they were sharing their stories, there remained a sense of detachment, as if they were speaking from a distance. I recognized the need to bridge this gap, to bring these experiences to life on camera. It wasn't just these moms; many small businesses faced a similar challenge, showcasing products and services but lacking an authentic connection. Their videos contained a blend of education and entertainment, yet something deeper was absent.

This realization prompted a change in the way I connected with my audience and expected others to connect with me. I had to lead by example, to "walk the walk and talk the talk." Thus, I began speaking on camera, despite the fear, shyness, and lack of preparation. The journey was daunting, but I persevered, learning and growing with each attempt. Drawing from my background in independent filmmaking and over 25 years in web development,

I crafted programs to help others gain confidence in front of

the camera.

Confidence on camera is the cornerstone of delivering an impactful and authentic message. To help you get there quicker, follow these steps before sharing your content online:

Prepare and Practice: Dedicate time to prepare and rehearse your content. Familiarity breeds confidence.

Dress for Success: Choose an outfit that boosts your confidence. Your appearance directly influences how you feel.

Maintain Strong Posture: Stand or sit with confidence – shoulders back, chin up, and engage your posture.

Connect with Your Audience: Imagine you're conversing with

a trusted friend. This visualization strengthens your connection with viewers.

Prioritize Your Message: Remember, your goal is sharing valuable content. Shift your focus to serving your audience and showcasing your expertise. Embrace Imperfections: Perfection isn't expected. Embrace mistakes as chances to showcase authenticity.

Practice Deep Breathing: Before going on camera, practice deep breathing to calm your nerves and focus your mind.

Make the Wonder Woman Pose: Adopting the Wonder Woman Pose, standing tall with your feet shoulder-width apart and your hands on your hips, can boost your confidence and empower you. This physical stance exudes strength and assertiveness, helping you bring that confidence into your camera presence.

Building confidence on camera takes practice. Be patient with yourself, celebrate progress, and don't hesitate to hit "post" or "share," even if it feels imperfect. Remember, your standard of perfection might not align with reality, but your message will genuinely impact and connect with at least one person.
