Beyond "Free-From": Why I Stopped Buying Skincare and Started Feeding My Skin

I remember the exact moment I stopped being impressed by the label "Clean Beauty."

I was standing in an aisle, holding a bottle of high-end serum, reading the back. It was a brag sheet of absences. No parabens. No sulfates. No phthalates. It was safe, sure. But as I looked at the ingredient list, I realized the industry was stuck in a defensive crouch. We had become so obsessed with removing toxins that we forgot to ask the most important question:

Once you take the bad stuff out, what is the good stuff actually doing?

That question became the catalyst for our skin care line at baceae. I realized that the future of beauty isn't about safety, safety should be the baseline, but it should also be about potency. I wanted to create something that didn't just sit on the epidermis, but actually communicated with biology.

My journey led me away from the cosmetic aisle and toward the concept of "Skin Food."

It sounds simple, almost quaint, but it exposes a massive hypocrisy in the wellness world. I found myself scrutinizing my grocery list, obsessing over organic spinach and grass-fed everything, only to turn around and slather my face with inert, synthetic compounds.

But the skin eats. It is porous. It absorbs.

I decided that if I wouldn't put it in my mouth, I shouldn't rely on it for my complexion. I began formulating with a grocery receipt rather than a chemical catalog. I found Dandelion root and Nettle leaf. I found Calendula Flower and Neem oil. I realized these weren't just ingredients; they were functional foods for the dermis.

But the real breakthrough happened when I started looking at how these botanicals interact with the body’s own signaling systems.

I dove into the research on the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) in relation to our skin. Most people know it from the CBD boom, but I saw a missing link in dermatology. Our skin is crawling with receptors that regulate inflammation and cell turnover. I realized that a standard "moisturizer" wasn't enough; I needed to create the right key that could unlock those receptors.

This led to the formulation of the Soothe + Restore salve. I didn't want to just toss CBD in and call it a day. I paired it in a potent 1:1 ratio with CBG (Cannabigerol).

The difference was immediate. While CBD regulated hydration, the CBG acted as a powerhouse antioxidant and antibacterial agent. By combining them with a lipid base of Shea butter and Virgin Coconut oil, I wasn't just masking dry skin. I was interrupting the inflammatory response that drives conditions like eczema and acne.

For me, this isn't just about manufacturing a product. It’s about respect for the largest organ of our body.

When I source organic, fair-trade ingredients that regenerate the soil, and when I blend it with Rooibos and German Chamomile, I’m tapping into a closed loop. Healthy soil creates potent plants; potent plants create resilient skin.

We should be done settling for "non-toxic." It is a low bar. I believe we are moving into the era of “Skin Food”, where our beauty routines are as nutritionally dense as our diets, and just as alive.
