Bold Moves, Fear, and Leading Forward

CEO of Pearl Lemon

The most audacious thing I did this year wasn't anything spectacular or visually appealing. No formal ceremony, no news releases. The decision to fundamentally reconsider Pearl Lemon's expansion strategy was subtle and a little frightening. We had a reliable system, a consistent beat, and consistent victories. However, I came to see that we couldn't continue doing what felt secure if we wanted to truly evolve. I therefore offered the team more latitude to try new things, try things that might not work, and take chances that we had previously shied away from.
To be honest, terror struck me like a wall. What if customers didn't like it? What if income decreased? What if I had simply thrown everything into disarray? Despite my nervousness, I made the move after sitting with it for a while. Bold decisions, it turns out, are about moving forward even when your gut is in knots, not about avoiding fear. In all honesty, fear eventually seems to diminish the more you act in spite of it.
I now deal with fear more by being aware of what I can manage than by acting as though it doesn't exist. I consider the facts, make a list of the things I can't control, discuss the situation with the team and my reliable advisors, and then just go for it. The adversary is not fear. It functions as a kind of caution sign that says, "Hey, you're stepping into the unknown,"which is precisely where growth resides if you pay attention.
The importance of trust is another lesson that really struck home this year. trusting the process, trusting the team to make decisions, and yes, trusting myself. Fear ceases to be paralysing once you accomplish that. It becomes this strange buddy that keeps you alert rather than still. Our culture became more flexible and self-assured, and we began seizing chances that we had previously passed over.
My primary leadership tenet for 2026 is to prioritise clarity above power. Although it can be tempting to micromanage and try to control every little detail, doing so just slows things down. Instead, your team will act more quickly and effectively than you could from the top if they get the vision, the boundaries, and the rationale behind decisions. People have a compass when they are clear. Every step is forced by control, which wears everyone out.
At the end of the day, growth doesn’t come from comfort. It comes from choosing to be brave, from acting even when your stomach is twisting into knots, and from setting up a system that lets the right answers show up naturally. That pivot this year changed not just our strategy but the way we work together. Pearl Lemon is faster, more daring, and yes, still a little messy, but in a good way.
Fear is still present. Most likely, it won't. However, it's now instructive. inspiring. A reminder that the wonderful things, the true progress, are always found beyond discomfort.
Audacious actions are decisions. Fear is unavoidable. Clarity is the essence of leadership. When you combine them, progress becomes more than just feasible. It's almost a given.
