Building Before You're Ready: Why Imperfect Action Beats Perfect Planning

The best decision I ever made was launching a product that wasn't finished.


It was 2012, and I was leading technology at Huge Inc., a digital agency serving Fortune 100 clients. We had an idea for an internal tool that could streamline how we managed complex projects across distributed teams. The smart move would have been to spend months refining it, testing every edge case, building a polished interface. Instead, we shipped a rough version in six weeks and put it in front of real users.


It was ugly. It broke constantly. And it taught us more in one month than six months of planning ever could have.



That experience shaped how I think about building anything—products, companies, careers. The entrepreneurs who succeed aren't the ones with perfect plans. They're the ones who start before they feel ready.


The Data Supports Imperfect Action

In 2025, roughly 20% of entrepreneurs self-financed their startups, committing personal resources before external validation existed. That number tells a story: founders who invest their own money tend to move faster, learn harder lessons, and build resilience that venture-backed competitors sometimes lack.


When you have skin in the game, every decision carries weight. You can't afford to wait for perfect information. You learn to make good-enough choices with incomplete data—a skill that separates successful founders from perpetual planners.


I've founded multiple SaaS companies, and the pattern is consistent. The ones that gained traction weren't the ones with the most elegant architecture or comprehensive feature sets at launch. They were the ones that reached users fastest and iterated based on real feedback.


Agile Isn't Just for Software

The tech industry formalized this approach through agile methodologies—build small, ship fast, learn, repeat. But the principle applies far beyond software development.


At Huge, we applied agile thinking to client engagements worth tens of millions of dollars. Rather than presenting finished strategies after months of research, we shared rough hypotheses early and refined them through collaboration. Clients initially found this uncomfortable. They expected polished presentations, not working documents. But the outcomes spoke for themselves: faster alignment, fewer late-stage surprises, and solutions that actually addressed real problems instead of assumed ones.


The same principle applies to career decisions, business pivots, and personal growth. Waiting until you feel completely prepared is a form of procrastination dressed up as prudence.


Momentum Is the Best Teacher

I keep a phrase on my desk: "Momentum is the best teacher—every misstep is a step forward." This isn't about being reckless. Imperfect action doesn't mean thoughtless action. It means accepting that you'll never have complete information, that your first version will have flaws, and that learning happens through doing rather than planning.


When I built a nearshore engineering operation in Colombia, scaling from zero to 200 engineers in 18 months, we didn't have a perfect playbook. We had hypotheses, a willingness to adjust quickly, and a culture that treated mistakes as data rather than failures.


That culture—learning and adaptation as core values—became more valuable than any individual decision we made. Teams that embrace imperfect action develop resilience. They stop fearing failure because they've experienced it repeatedly and survived.


The Cost of Waiting

Every week spent perfecting a plan is a week your competitors might be learning from real users. Every month delayed for additional research is a month of market feedback you'll never get back.


I've watched talented founders spend years refining ideas that the market would have validated or killed in weeks. The saddest outcome isn't building something that fails—it's never building at all because the conditions never felt quite right.


The conditions will never feel right. The market will never be perfectly timed. Your product will never be fully ready. Start anyway.


Build before you're ready. Ship before it's perfect. Learn before you're certain.
