Building Community Infrastructure That Outlives the Moment

Camille Smith is an engineer, creator, and the Founder and CEO of STEM So(ul)cial, a global third space designed to support, connect, and empower Black STEM professionals. For Smith, legacy is not measured by titles held or accolades earned, but by what continues to move forward long after someone leaves the room. It is the confidence instilled, the access normalized, and the pathways made possible for others to walk through with greater ease.

Smith’s understanding of legacy is rooted in stewardship—of people, ideas, and possibility. Through her work with STEM So(ul)cial, she has witnessed how intentional community-building can quietly alter life trajectories. Sometimes legacy looks like a student choosing a STEM path because they finally see themselves reflected in the field. Other times, it appears as a professional staying in an industry not because the work became easier, but because the community made it sustainable. These moments, though rarely spotlighted, are the outcomes that matter most to her.

Since its founding, STEM So(ul)cial has grown its reach across 16+ cities in the United States and the United Kingdom, serving as a consistent point of connection for Black STEM professionals navigating education, early career growth, and leadership transitions. In November 2025, the organization hosted its inaugural STEM So(ul)cial Summit in Philadelphia—bringing together community members, speakers, and partners for a multi-day experience rooted in professional development, wellness, and collective vision-setting.

What distinguishes Smith’s leadership is her emphasis on building infrastructure rather than one-off programs. From the beginning, STEM So(ul)cial was designed to be larger than any single person, title, or season. The organization prioritizes mentorship, access, and shared ownership, creating systems that can thrive even as leadership evolves. Its continued growth has been driven not by trend-following, but by listening closely to what the community has consistently asked for.

As a result, STEM So(ul)cial is on track to expand its programming to include deeper membership offerings, wellness-centered experiences, and curated travel opportunities—each designed in direct response to community needs. STEM So(ul)cial will also return to Philadelphia for its next summit, scheduled for November 13–15, 2026, continuing its commitment to creating spaces for connection, restoration, and long-term professional sustainability.

Smith believes that the most consequential leadership decisions are often the quiet ones: who receives investment, whose voices are centered, and which systems are built slowly and with care. In a culture that often rewards speed and visibility, she has chosen integrity over optics, rest over burnout, and collective progress over individual recognition. These values shape not only how she leads, but the type of culture STEM So(ul)cial continues to cultivate.

As an engineer by training, Smith brings a systems-oriented mindset to her work, understanding that sustainable impact requires thoughtful design and long-term thinking. As a creator and community builder, she recognizes the power of representation and belonging. Together, these identities inform her approach to leadership—one rooted in responsiveness, intention, and the belief that legacy is built by meeting people where they are and growing alongside them.
