Does online presence really matter?

by Beth Ann Kaib

Heck yeah it does! When was the last time you pulled out the yellow pages or newspaper to find a business or product? In this fast paced world, you have an average of four seconds to capture the attention of your viewer before they keep scrolling through their media feed. Are you clearly conveying who you are, what you do and why you are different from your competitor within the first four viewing seconds? Do you have reviews demonstrating a reason to be trusted? Are you consistent in your messaging across all of your online platforms?

It can be overwhelming, but maintaining your online presence is so worth it. Consistency is key. So what exactly is consistency?

First, there’s consistency with posting on social media. If you are going to play the social media game, be sure to post several times a week (or day depending on the platform) and interact with your audience regularly. If you miss a post, you can pitfall backwards in the algorithm. A scheduling platform can be a useful tool.

Second, there’s consistency with branding. Are you identifiable through your colors, fonts, logo and overall appearance? Is your message the same on every platform? If a prospective client or customer is scrolling through, are they going to recognize your post?

Third, are your words the same on every platform? Is your message consistent?

I specialize in launching and relaunching businesses and these are the most common, overlooked errors I see repetitively. These small business owners have amazing products and services. They have one problem. They try to do everything on their own.

Aside from burn out, their businesses struggle because their scattered thoughts are written all over their online presence. If fragmented and inconsistent information is presented, the potential consumer lacks clarity. Would you hire someone that isn’t demonstrating clarity in what they do? Probably not.

Money is a factor. As a start up or struggling business, money is always a factor in hiring and outsourcing. Do you have something you can trade? What if you meet in the middle somehow? I have set up templates for clients with a brief training so they are set up successfully to take on their own social media. I have built simple websites and provided a video tutorial on how to change basic information on their website. Get creative! You didn’t land in this entrepreneurial world without creativity.

Take control of your online presence and stop letting your message get lost in the noise. Whether you’re launching or relaunching your business, your ability to maintain consistency across platforms is critical to standing out and building trust with your audience. Don't let overwhelm or a limited budget hold you back—there are creative solutions available, from templates and training to personalized guidance, that can help you succeed without burning out. Are you ready to level up?
