Embracing Worthiness Through Life’s Challenges

Tishana Eason

Tishana Eason, known fondly as Brooklyn, was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, by her Panamanian parents who pursued the American dream to provide a better life for her and her siblings. From a young age, Brooklyn was taught the importance of education, attending one of the top schools in Brooklyn, Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School. At just 19 years old, she became a salon owner, where she began offering counsel to women from behind the chair.

Brooklyn's life took many turns, especially when she became a wife to a military spouse and a mother. She put her career on hold to support her husband’s demanding career and to take care of her children. However, at 37, her life changed dramatically when she separated from her husband and found herself starting over in Georgia with her two children. Determined to make the best of her situation, she opened a new salon, launched a fashion line business, and became a life coach, using her life experiences to guide others.

In her chapter, Brooklyn reflects on her long struggle with feelings of unworthiness. Despite her outgoing personality, she often questioned her self-worth, a common issue many face, particularly during their teenage years. She recalls the pressure of high school and how the judgments and rejections from peers influenced her self-view. Brooklyn poses a critical question: why do we let others determine our worth? She learned that many of us let imperfect people dictate our value, a lesson that took her years and much suffering to understand. Brooklyn’s childhood was marred by witnessing her mother’s pain from a broken marriage, which planted seeds of negativity and self-doubt in her. This generational pain and learned behavior made Brooklyn question her appearance and worth from a young age. She grappled with these feelings even into adulthood, not realizing her true value and the gifts God had given her.

Marrying young didn’t resolve these issues; in fact, it exacerbated them. Her husband’s military career required frequent relocations, leaving Brooklyn isolated and struggling with infidelity in her marriage. These experiences deepened her feelings of unworthiness, especially as she compared herself to the women her husband cheated with, triggering insecurities about her dark complexion.

Suicidal thoughts crept in, but Brooklyn found solace in her faith. Attending church, she learned the true meaning of worthiness—that she was valued and loved by God, regardless of her past or current struggles. This realization was a turning point, helping her connect her worth to her talents and the purpose God had given her. She began using her salon chair as a platform to coach and comfort her clients, finding strength in helping others despite her own challenges.

Brooklyn’s journey of self-discovery continued as she ministered and prayed for others at church. Although she felt insecure about her ability to help others while her own life was in turmoil, she realized that her experiences uniquely qualified her to offer genuine support. After her divorce, she truly found herself, rebuilding her career and embracing her worth for the first time. She no longer let others control her self-perception and learned to love herself deeply.

Today, Brooklyn’s life has transformed. She understands that knowing her worth comes with a new outlook on life, a new walk, and a new talk. She recognizes the importance of removing negative influences and surrounding herself with positivity. Her message to others is clear: you are worthy, no matter what. By speaking life to oneself and embracing one’s unique purpose, anyone can find and cherish their worth.

Brooklyn's story is one of resilience and empowerment. Her journey from feeling unworthy to embracing her true value serves as an inspiration to many. She continues to touch lives through her work, offering a powerful example of how overcoming personal struggles can lead to profound personal growth and the ability to help others heal.
