Enduring Power: The Strength Behind the Legacy

I have often reflected on how legacy is built. For me, it was not created through wealth, privilege, or an easy path. It was built slowly through resilience, motherhood, education, and the determination to create something different for the next generation.

I grew up in a home marked by instability and adversity. At 16 years old, I learned that the man who raised me was not my biological father, and longstanding issues within the home came to light that dramatically changed the course of my family’s life. My mother, who left school after the ninth grade, worked hard to rebuild our family while raising four children. Watching her persevere through difficult circumstances taught me strength long before I fully understood it myself.

I became the first person on my mother’s side of the family to graduate from high school. One week after my 19th birthday, I became a mother myself. While 19 is still young, that experience shaped much of my early adulthood and gave me a deep sense of responsibility and purpose. Much of those early years focused on survival, parenting, and creating stability for my son. Over time, I became a mother of five, and my children became one of the greatest motivations behind every goal I pursued.

When my son was in second grade, I began volunteering at his school and discovered a passion for education. I slowly worked my way through college while raising my family and eventually earned my degree in Special Education from Coppin State University.

Years later, after spending much of my life focused on motherhood and family, I returned to the workforce as a special education teacher. That experience led me to realize that my true passion was helping people heal emotionally, not just succeed academically. I went on to earn my master’s degree in counseling and spent 18 years working within the Howard County Public School System as a school counselor and crisis responder. I also worked with survivors of intimate partner violence and sexual assault, supporting survivors during vulnerable moments.

Over time, I realized I wanted to support people beyond moments of crisis. That realization led me to open Adams Counseling Services, a private practice rooted in compassion, accessibility, and growth. What began as a small practice has grown into a team of 13 therapists and two administrative staff members serving children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families across Maryland.

One of the most meaningful parts of this journey is seeing legacy unfold within my own family. My oldest daughter, who already holds a master’s degree in public health, is now pursuing a second master’s degree in clinical counseling. Watching her continue work centered on helping others reminds me that healing and perseverance can change the trajectory of generations.

My story is one of resilience, reinvention, motherhood, and purpose. I am passionate about helping others heal, supporting women rebuilding their lives, mentoring new clinicians, and creating a legacy rooted in empathy, growth, and service.
