By Tricia Copeland

Hosted and published by Tricia Copeland, the Finding the Magic Book Podcast is in its 5th season with over two-hundred published episodes. The show features authors in meetups designed to learn about their books, characters, plots, and worlds, as well as the inspiration behind them. Interviewing indie as well as traditionally published authors like Casey L. Bond, Jennifer L. Armentrout, Allison Ashley, Sebastien de Castell, Jennifer L. Armentrout, and J.D. Barker, the podcast aims to connect readers with books and authors they’ll love.

With a laid-back conversational style, Tricia speaks with her guests organically as if talking over a cup of coffee, minus the slurping. She jumps right into the books, diving deep into sub-genres, character profiles, motivations, world building, magic systems in fantasy books, POVs, and themes. Listeners can expect to hear from authors writing in many genres, predominately fantasy, science fiction, and romance, but also thrillers, occasionally horror, contemporary and speculative fiction, as well as memoirs and poetry collections.

In alignment with her author brand, Tricia keeps her podcast PG-14. Her feature books range from middle-grade to adult but you’ll never get a graphic step-by-step of how the zombie procured and ate the brain. She definitely talks about zombies because who doesn’t love a good zombie book? Romance lovers might skip those, but the title and cover graphics for each episode highlight the author, one of their book covers, and generally list the genre, so you can select shows you’ll love.

Common questions during the show may include: who are your characters; what are your characters; where did the inspiration for the character come from; what point-of-view is the book written in; what type of world is the book set it; what time period is the piece set in; how did you create the world; do you plan for this to be a series; how will you know when the series is done; how much research did you do for this book; why did you write this book; and what do you want readers to take away from this story.

For the writer aiming to become a published author, Tricia asks some questions about the guests’ journeys. The authors share how they started writing, what their process was in becoming a published author, whether they outline or are a pantser, and how they keep up with their worlds and characters. If you’re purely a reader, these insights give a little back story to why you may see certain themes in an author’s works and what you might expect from them in the future.

Listed in the top twenty fantasy book podcasts by Million Podcasts, with episodes ranging from a quarter to half-hour, these shows are perfect for a morning commute, mid-day stroll, or evening vegging on YouTube. Whether listening or watching on Spotify, favorite podcast channels or via video, you’ll get up close and personal with your favorite authors or soon to be binge-read books in the Finding the Magic Book Podcast.
