Richelle Peña was born on May 23, 1982, to Filipino immigrants in Miami. Her parents, Teresita and Ricardo Garcia, moved to the United States in the 1970s as nurses seeking better opportunities. Growing up, Richelle's parents instilled in her the belief that she could achieve more than they did, encouraging her to be better and strive higher. This mindset, coupled with their entrepreneurial spirit, significantly shaped Richelle's approach to life and career.
Determined to forge her own path, Richelle chose to become a pharmacist rather than follow the conventional route of nursing, commonly encouraged in Filipino families. She pursued an accelerated pharmacy program and obtained her Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2007. Though she did not have a passion for pharmacy, Richelle embraced the career for its stability and respectability, aligning with her family's values of good education and a solid profession.
Richelle's time as a pharmacist at Target proved to be a turning point. Recognized as a "high potential" manager, she was thrust into a pharmacy manager role in Pinole, California, soon after getting her license. This position required her to learn business operations, financial management, and team leadership—skills she had not acquired in pharmacy school. Richelle's innate confidence, combined with the lessons learned from her parents' entrepreneurial journey, helped her excel in this new environment.
Richelle's husband, William Peña, was completing his pediatric dentistry residency when they decided to return to Florida. With a shared vision of opening dental offices for underserved children, the couple embarked on a new venture. In 2011, they opened their first pediatric dental office, marking the beginning of the American Pediatric Dental Group. This endeavor coincided with the birth of their first child, adding a new layer of responsibility and challenge to Richelle's life.
The success of the American Pediatric Dental Group was rooted in its strong purpose and mission to serve underserved children. Richelle and William focused on creating a positive team culture and delivering exceptional patient care. They accepted state Medicaid, operated during late evenings and weekends, and ensured their offices were modern and welcoming. Richelle's role involved managing administrative tasks, marketing, and establishing systems and processes for scaling the business.
The journey was not without its hurdles. Richelle and William faced financial strains and tough decisions, such as laying off staff to sustain operations. Their dedication, however, paid off. By 2020, the group had expanded to seven locations, employing over 130 team members and serving more than 50,000 patients. The acquisition by a larger dental service organization in 2021 marked the culmination of their hard work and vision.
Richelle's ability to balance her roles as a wife, mother of three, and entrepreneur is a testament to her resilience and commitment to self-care.
