As we approach Veterans Day, it’s essential to reflect on those who have bravely put their lives on the line for our freedom. Freedom isn’t free; it carries with it unseen scars that linger, affecting not only our veterans but also their families. It’s a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made, which often go unnoticed.

In a world where gratitude, love, and community spirit are more vital than ever, we should strive to embody the support that our veterans need. May they feel God’s love not just in spirit but also through the tangible support of their communities and families.

It's crucial to remind every veteran that they matter. God loves you deeply, and you are never alone in your battles. Those dark moments can feel overwhelming, but reaching out for help can bring light. I’ve faced those challenges myself and can attest to the importance of connection. Many people, even those who seem the strongest, have walked through similar struggles, often feeling they must carry their burdens alone. But remember, you are NOT alone!

If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out. Call a friend, a pastor, a counselor, or the crisis hotline at 1-800-273-8255. Spread awareness and let others know you care. It’s important to acknowledge that the suicide rates among police, firefighters, and veterans are alarmingly high. These individuals risk their lives daily for our safety. Let’s show our appreciation through our actions, both in our communities and on social media.

As someone who has had the honor of working with countless veterans and first responders over 30 years, I understand the unique challenges they face. My husband is a retired chief of police and a veteran and I am a veteran. Plus, I grew u with a dad who was in Vietnam and many veteran family members, so, I’ve witnessed firsthand the struggles these families endure.

Here are some practical tips for veterans and first responders to support their mental well-being:

1. Take mental breaks - Even a few minutes of focused breathing can help clear your mind.

My favorite tool is the 4-7-8 breathing tool you can find here - https://youtu.be/hcYRhRqyBWM?si=I0JakP7nTw3I7Q19

2. Incorporate regular exercise - Physical activity is crucial for mental health, and even 15 minutes a day can make a significant difference.

3. Create a transition Ritual - Find an activity that helps you separate work from home life, such as listening to uplifting music or taking a short walk.

4. Prioritize family time - Engage in activities without distractions—game nights, family dinners, or devotionals can strengthen bonds.

5. Build a supportive network - Surround yourself with healthy friendships that inspire you to live your best life.

I recently authored a book titled “Breath of Heaven: Manifesting God’s Way”, which explores how biblical principles and brain science can be used to cultivate an abundant life. It’s filled with tools for brain health and spiritual growth. You can find at - https://www.amazon.com/dp/1968061371

Additionally, I offer free resources on my YouTube channel, including meditations and breathwork exercises. I’d love to connect with you—let’s inspire each other to be blessings in our communities! https://youtube.com/@warriorhearthealinghearts?si=lRPMWNljo3uRZmRP

American Soldier Poem

By Erica Renee Elliott, 8/4/2016

American Soldier tried and true

Stands in the gap for the Red, White and Blue

Loves his country with dauntless sacrifice

Few understand how much they pay the price

Giving more than most will ever know

Some gave their lives, and others their very souls

The nightmares that haunt only his brothers understand

That part of him stayed in that barren, God-forsaken land

What more can he do? It’s changed his soul,

Not sure in his mind that he can ever be whole.

The love for his brothers more than his own life,

Something few understand and in some families cause bitterness and strife.

They may have been strangers before they took the oath,

But war made them brothers, a bond that can never be broke.
