How Podcasting Builds True Brand Authority (and What Most People Get Wrong)

Podcasting has changed dramatically since I started in 2005. Back then, there were no rules, no templates, and no clear path forward. That turned out to be the advantage.
Over the past two decades, I have built authority not through one show, but through three distinct lifestyle podcasts: The Groove Radio, Cookery by the Book, and Decorating by the Book. Each one carved out its own podcast niche, and together they became something bigger, a cohesive body of work that is me, my taste, my perspective, my lifestyle.
What I have learned is that podcasting does not just support a brand. It is the brand.
How podcasts strengthen brand authority
A podcast gives you something no other medium can, time and intimacy. When someone listens to your voice consistently, week after week, you build trust in a way that social media cannot replicate.
Authority comes from consistency and clarity. With The Groove Radio, I created a space for intentional listening. It is not algorithm-driven. It is curated, personal, and rooted in deep knowledge of soul music. That consistency over time turned it into the longest-running soul music podcast since 2005 and a trusted destination for listeners.
With Cookery by the Book, I saw a gap. No one was solely interviewing cookbook authors in the food podcast space. So I created the cookbook podcast niche.
With Decorating by the Book, I extended that same idea into the decorating world, creating the only podcast focused entirely on interior design books.
Authority is not about being everywhere. It is about owning something specific.
Positioning strategies that attract the right audience
The strongest positioning is simple, clear, and repeatable.
Each of my shows has a defined identity:
The Groove Radio is a curated music experience
Cookery by the Book is the original cookbook podcast
Decorating by the Book is the only podcast for design book lovers
There is no confusion about what each show offers. That clarity attracts the right audience and filters out the wrong one.
Longevity is another key strategy. In a space where many podcasts start and stop, staying consistent over years builds credibility that cannot be manufactured. It signals commitment, depth, and expertise.
Press also reinforces authority. Being recognized by Forbes adds an external layer of validation, but that only comes after years of consistent work.
What weakens podcast authority
The biggest mistake is chasing trends instead of building something lasting.
Right now there is a push toward video, clips, and fast content. But authority is not built in fragments. It is built through depth, intention, and a clear editorial voice.
Trying to appeal to everyone is another mistake. When a podcast lacks focus, it becomes forgettable. The strongest shows know exactly who they are for.
Inconsistency also breaks trust. Authority depends on reliability, showing up even when it is not perfect.
Curation matters more than most people realize. A podcast is not just content. It is a point of view. What you choose to include, and what you leave out, defines your brand. You also have to love what you are podcasting about. If there is no passion, there is no show. I love soul music, cookbooks, and decorating with all my heart, and that is what makes the work real.
The long game of authority
Podcasting is a long-term investment in your voice, your perspective, and your audience. That kind of longevity only works if it is rooted in genuine passion. The reason I have stayed consistent for 20 years is simple. I care deeply about what I share. That love carries you through the quiet moments and the slow growth.
After 20 years, what stands out is the body of work, the consistency, and the trust built over time.
Authority is not declared. It is earned.
And podcasting, when done with intention and real love for the subject matter, is one of the most powerful ways to build it.
