How Refusing to Sacrifice Authenticity Helped Grow My Podcast Audience

I didn’t build a top ten ranked podcast on successful book launching by being polished…I built it by being helpful.

Over the last several years, I’ve grown an online audience of 200,000+ authors (both fiction and non-fiction) while scaling podcast downloads by not turning my show into a nonstop sales pitch.

Here’s how I did it.

Giving, Helping, and Providing Value First!

I run my content on a strict 10:1 ratio: ten pieces of content that “give” for each one that “asks.” For me, that means specific, tactical, and sometimes uncomfortably honest advice…long before promotion ever enters the room. I believe that audiences these days will turn the proverbial dial the minute a host sounds more interested in selling than sharing. But when listeners feel like they’re still getting massive value, even if they never buy a thing, a foundational trust is established.

Fun fact: I also leave my mistakes in. If I misspeak, change my mind, or realize I was wrong? I say so…live on air. Polished perfection is inauthentic and entirely unrelatable, and I’ve learned from audience feedback over the years, that my genuine vulnerability is what they love about me most.

And finally, I don’t simply regurgitate 6-year-old advice, like others in my niche do. I teach what they avoid, overlook, or (frankly) don’t know or understand enough to explain. One of the most common things I hear in listener feedback is, “Wow. You really DO know what you’re talking about.” They don’t say this because I’m the most polished, charismatic expert they’ve ever heard. They say it because my genuine desire to teach, guide, and support my fellow authors is clear in every message.

Showing Up Genuinely, Warts and All!

The authenticity I share with my audience goes beyond my distinctive southern drawl and occasional potty words. I couple it with actionable, dependable, expert advice backed by 20 years of publishing industry experience. I’m not talking AT my audience. I AM my audience. Unlike many of the other people who teach and serve authors, I’m an author who has navigated the exact challenges my listeners face, and I speak from experience, not rinse-and-repeat, vague theory.

Listeners stay when they feel heard, understood, and supported. They want real, honest advice on actual steps they can take to reach their goals, not repeated Pinterest motivational quotes or vague inspiration. When I choose my guests and my topics for each episode, I ask myself, “What would I really need to hear on this issue that would help me realize my dream?”

My Podcast Helped Me Show Up Better, More Authentically for My Audience!

Podcasting stripped away my tolerance for fluff. Hosting my show forced me to say what I mean, and stand behind it…publicly, consistently, and in real time. When you’re in someone’s ears week after week, there’s nowhere to hide. You either develop a voice rooted in truth, or your audience moves on. And I certainly wouldn’t be gearing up for a fourth (much demanded) season if I had never figured this out.

My voice today is clearer, bolder, and more direct because podcasting demands it. And that clarity is exactly what my listeners trust and why they tune in each week.

I encourage you to try the 10:1 “give versus ask” type of hosting, as well as being raw, real, and 100% YOU (while still maintaining a level of professionalism) a chance. I promise…you’ll see a difference almost immediately!
