How Vibroacoustic Therapy Changed My Life

My name is Dr. Colleen Cira. I’m a licensed clinical psychologist, trauma expert, and founder of both Cira Center for Behavioral Health and Cira Center Consulting. But before any of those titles, I am an Autistic ADHD-er, a trauma survivor, and a parent to two neurodivergent children. Which means chronic stress has been stitched into my nervous system for as long as I can remember.

For years, I lived with cortisol flooding my body. I tracked it—my biometric readings made it plain as day. My body was always bracing for impact, always in fight-or-flight. As a psychologist, I understood the science. As a human, I felt trapped in it.

I knew I had to find another way—for myself and for my clients.

That search took me into the world of holistic healing—approaches rooted in ancient wisdom but supported by modern technology. I discovered vibroacoustic therapy, a modality that uses sound frequencies and vibration to regulate the nervous system. On the surface, it might sound like a spa treatment. But the science is real: vibration and sound directly engage the parasympathetic nervous system, the part of us responsible for rest, digestion, and repair.

In this chaotic, constantly busy world, healing often feels like one more thing on our already overloaded plates. We’re told we have to journal more, meditate longer, exercise harder, eat cleaner. We’re often made to feel like wellness is work.

Vibroacoustic therapy reimagines what healing can be. Instead of demanding effort, all it requires is that we receive. You simply lie down, allow the vibration and sound to wash over you, and your nervous system does the rest.

When I started incorporating vibroacoustic sessions, everything began to shift. My stress levels dropped in measurable ways. My recovery time—the space between feeling dysregulated and finding calm—shortened. For the first time in a long time, I felt like my body and mind were on the same team.

The experience was so profound that it became more than just part of my personal wellness routine—it became part of my professional mission. Trauma survivors, neurodivergent people, and chronically stressed women often feel like their bodies betray them. Vibroacoustic therapy offers a way back home. It doesn’t erase trauma, ADHD, or autism. It helps the body find rhythm and safety again.

That matters because regulation is the foundation for everything else. Without it, therapy, mindfulness, even medication can feel like climbing uphill with no oxygen. With it, the ground beneath your feet steadies. Healing becomes possible.

As both a psychologist and someone with lived experience, I’ve made it my work to bridge these worlds—pairing research-backed psychology with holistic practices that honor the body. Vibroacoustic therapy is one of the tools I now recommend, not as a magic bullet, but as a doorway: a way for people to access their nervous system, reduce stress, and reconnect with themselves.

If you’ve been stuck in survival mode, I want you to know there’s nothing wrong with you. Your body has been doing its best to protect you. And there are tools—like vibroacoustic therapy—that can help you shift from simply surviving to truly living.
