In 2019, I was stuck down with Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS).
Within 12 hours of noticing a slight tingling in my feet I was airlifted from north west Tasmania to Hobart for critical care. GBS is a rare disorder in which your body's immune system attacks your nerves. The onset is rapid and leads to paralysis.Â
As an emerging designer and maker of leather accessories, where I considered my hands as my biggest asset, this was a brutal blow.Â
Recovery was, and still is a long process. Regaining strength and movement is key in being able to reclaim independence.Â
While I continued to work with leather, I began to dabble in jewellery. I had no idea that this new direction would be pivotal in my recovery.
Self taught in most things, I embraced this new challenge. I developed these skills and this intensive use of fine motor skills helped set me free of the restraints of my illness.Â
It also allowed me to finally pursue a long held dream of supporting and uplifting women.
As the months passed, I carved out an idea that would become The Sister Label. Once I had established an affordable product line that was of the highest quality, I literally went door to door seeking stockists.Â
I was overwhelmed by the response I received from women in small business who shared my passion for uplifting women, and helping them feel special without breaking the bank!
In 18 Months I have taken The Sister Label to over 20 Stockists! Nothing fills me with joy more than knowing that by sharing my passion through my product that I am helping create a tribe of women who believe in themselves and understand their inner strength and potential.
While my intention is to continue to add passionate retailers to my list of stockists, I am really excited to be now reaching more women who are coming directly to the website to invest in the product and themselves.Â
My message to women is simple, never doubt your inner strength, there is nothing you can’t come back from! Always remember, that by embracing each other as ‘sisters’, we are a power to be reckoned with!Â
I will never tire of that feeling I get when another woman joins ‘The Sister Label Feel Good Movement’. FB: thesisterlabel
