Cheri Dixon
Cheri Dixon is the dynamic force behind A Girl and Her Dog Coaching and Consulting and serves as an elementary school principal. From a young age, Cheri knew she was destined to make a difference. Her journey began in the classroom, where she aimed to provide children with the tools they needed to succeed. Over time, her mission evolved. After facing various personal challenges, Cheri realized she could also help women build fulfilling lives with the right support. As a co-author of "Unleash Her," published by She Rises Studios, and host of the talk show "Confident, Courageous, and Clear" on Fenix TV, Cheri is dedicated to empowering women, especially those who feel lost in their daily lives.
Cheri never set out to become a leader in education. Her passion was teaching, not leading. However, her natural leadership qualities were recognized early in her career, leading her to become an elementary principal at a relatively young age. Cheri’s leadership style is rooted in service. She believes in supporting her community, students, and staff, understanding that her strength as a leader is measured by their success. This philosophy has guided her through 16 years of successful leadership in three schools.
Throughout her career, Cheri observed leaders from diverse backgrounds. She noticed that the most effective leaders were charismatic and confident, able to inspire others to follow their vision. These leaders also prioritized their people’s needs, dedicating time, energy, and focus to help others achieve their best. Cheri believes that true leadership is about people. While management skills like organization and time management are essential, they must be balanced with soft skills such as building confidence, active listening, problem-solving, and respectful communication. Cheri’s leadership is guided by three key principles: lead, serve, and love.
1. Lead to All: Cheri leads by example, holding herself to high standards of integrity and work ethic. She believes in motivating and supporting her team to reach their highest potential. She models dedication and excellence in every situation, even when no one is watching. Cheri’s belief in her team’s abilities and her willingness to provide support when needed creates a positive and empowering environment.
2. Serve: For Cheri, leadership is not about seeking accolades or recognition. It’s about the success of those she leads. She views herself as a servant leader, standing alongside her team and providing whatever they need to succeed. For example, if a teacher struggles with a lesson, Cheri steps in to offer hands-on assistance, ensuring that both the teacher and students benefit. This approach keeps Cheri connected to the realities of classroom teaching and reinforces her commitment to her team’s development.
3. Love: The most crucial principle for Cheri is love. She believes that the love and care within a school community are palpable. This love fosters a positive climate and culture, which is essential for success. Cheri’s genuine care for her staff, students, and community creates a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and motivated to take risks and grow. She knows her staff, students, and community needs intimately, which helps her lead, serve, and love effectively.
Cheri emphasizes that while managerial skills are important, true leadership is about balancing these skills with strong soft skills. This balance allows everyone in the organization to thrive and perform at their best. Cheri’s approach to leadership, rooted in service and love, has been instrumental in her success and the success of the communities she leads.
