The Rev. Katherine Doyle, chaplain at Boys Home of Virginia, embodies a rare and meaningful balance: the resilience required to guide young men through some of the most trying periods of their lives, and the love and compassion that remind them they are worthy, valued, and capable of transformation. In a world where many young people face instability, adversity, and uncertainty, Katherine’s presence offers something deeply grounding. Her leadership reflects a truth at the heart of Boys Home—that faith, when lived out in love, can change lives.

Boys Home of Virginia is a residential boarding school that serves middle- and high-school-aged young men who benefit from structure, support, and a nurturing environment. The organization’s mission centers on helping each student overcome adversity and build a more hopeful trajectory for the future. For many residents, Boys Home is the first place where they feel truly safe, supported, and encouraged to see themselves through a lens of potential rather than limitation. Into this setting, Katherine brought not only her training and talents but a pastoral heart dedicated to meeting each young man exactly where he is.

Katherine arrived in 2021 with her husband, Chris Doyle, the current executive director. With a background in psychology and Anglican studies, she bridges two essential worlds: evidence-based understanding of human development and the spiritual wisdom that guides deeper healing. She uses both skill sets to connect with students—listening attentively, offering practical tools for growth, and reminding them through her words and actions that they are beloved children of God.

Her role at Boys Home is both structured and relational. As chaplain, she leads weekly Spiritual Formation and chapel services, creating a space where students can explore faith, ask questions, seek comfort, and learn life-giving values grounded in dignity and love. Outside of these formal settings, Katherine is a steady presence in the daily rhythms of campus life. She also serves as a pastor in the local community, deepening the connections between Boys Home and the region it serves.

Students affectionately refer to her as “Mama Doyle,” a title that reveals the profound trust and warmth she inspires. It reflects not only her guidance but the consistency with which she shows up: in the classroom, in the cottages, at campus events, and in countless small moments when a young man simply needs someone to hear him. Whether she is offering a listening ear, a word of encouragement, or a gentle reminder of each student’s inherent worth, Katherine leads with love.

Her leadership is not loud or showy—it is steady, patient, rooted in faith, and built on the belief that compassion is powerful enough to create real change.

When asked about her work at Boys Home, Katherine explains the heart of her calling: “I believe every person is a beloved child of God worthy of dignity and respect with no exceptions, and there is nothing that anyone has done or will do that separates them from the love of God. I am called to live that in the way I interact with others. Sadly, there are many people who believe, for whatever reason they are not worthy. I will hold the belief for them until they can hold it themselves."

In her leadership, Katherine not only teaches faith, but she embodies it. She shows students what it means to be resilient, to be compassionate, and to believe in love’s ability to restore and uplift. For the young men of Boys Home, this is not just ministry. It is life-changing guidance offered with grace and unwavering hope.
