Living Well Despite Chronic Illness: How I Reclaimed My Health and Refused to Be Defined by Disease

by Sonya McDonald, RN,BSN,BCC

For years, I battled pain, fatigue, and the emotional toll of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Fibromyalgia. As a Board-Certified Transformational Life Coach and Registered Nurse with three decades of experience, I knew medical treatments well, but despite many medications, my symptoms persisted. My body wasn’t the only thing suffering; my mind was weighed down by the negativity and anxiety that chronic illness brings. However, through intentional lifestyle changes, I reclaimed my health and life. Here’s how I transformed my mindset and physical well-being—and how you can thrive, not just survive, despite health challenges.

The Power of a Positive Mindset

Our mindset profoundly impacts our health. For years, my mind was clouded with negativity—fear, frustration, and hopelessness. I realized that to heal my body, I first needed to heal my mind. This began with gratitude journaling. Every day, I wrote down three things I was grateful for, no matter how small. Gradually, my mindset changed. The more I focused on the positive aspects of my life, the more resilient I became in facing my health challenges. I began to see that I was not defined by my disease; my illness was just one part of me, not the whole story.

Reconnecting with Nature and Prayer

One of the most effective ways I nurtured both my mind and body was spending time in nature. Daily walks in nature became a non-negotiable part of my routine. These walks offered a sanctuary where I could clear my mind and reconnect with myself. The rhythmic movement of walking, coupled with the serenity of nature, reduced my anxiety and stress levels. During these walks, I found clarity, inspiration, and a deep sense of peace. Daily prayer became another cornerstone of my healing process. Through prayer, I cultivated a sense of calm and faith that sustained me, helping me navigate the ups and downs of my health journey.

Healing from the Inside Out: The Role of Nutrition

Nutrition plays a critical role in managing chronic illnesses, and for me, decreasing inflammatory foods was a game-changer. I began by eliminating foods known to exacerbate inflammation, such as processed sugars, refined carbs, and unhealthy fats. I introduced a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. One of the most significant additions to my routine was drinking celery juice every morning. Celery juice is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and incorporating it into my diet significantly reduced the inflammation in my body.

The Results: A New Lease on Life

The combination of these daily habits—gratitude journaling, walking in nature, prayer, and adopting an anti-inflammatory diet—resulted in a dramatic improvement in my health. Not only did my physical symptoms decrease, but I also experienced an overall sense of well-being. My anxiety levels dropped, and I felt more in control of my life than I had in years. I realized that by making healthy habits a part of my daily routine, I could thrive despite my chronic illness.
