Make It a New Year!

By Tiffany Tyler-Garner, PhD It is 2026! As we begin this new year, make sure it is really a new year! Commit to doing new things this year. Whether it is applying new strategies or approaches, or beginning a new practice or opportunity, this is a great time to make your year new by doing something new. Don’t be content with being on the sidelines of your life and don’t accept the complacency characterized by:
Just getting by.
Barely making ends meet.
Going along to get along.
Letting others set the bar for your joy, peace, or health.
You deserve a year filled with abundance. Moreover, you deserve a life that exemplifies the potential, gifts, and talents that you bring to every table and this world. If you are not consistently experiencing a quality of life indicative of your hopes, dreams, and vision, let this new year be a new opportunity to do it.

As a first step, take stock of all you’ve been doing and ask yourself:
Am I beginning this year where I hoped in my:
Physical health?
Financial health?
Mental health?
Emotional health?
Social health?
Occupational health?
Spiritual health?
Am I realizing the vision I have for my life, including the vision I have for my:
Relationships?
Career?
Finances?
Health
Home?
Are my choices, thinking, beliefs, and mindset serving me well?
Am I building the legacy I envision?
Am I consistently communicating, collaborating, coordinating, and decision-making effectively?
Am I leading myself and others effectively?
If I died today, would my obituary reflect the life, leadership, and legacy I hope to contribute to the world?
If I died today, am I more likely to die with regret, revelation, reservations, or reward? If I spent this year doing what I did last year, would I be further ahead or further behind?
If my children or others followed my example, would they be successful?
If your answers to any of these questions are inconsistent with the life you desire, you have an opportunity to do something new this year!
If you are facing a reality that suggests something new is needed, know that you have many opportunities to do something new. Areas to consider are your:
Philosophy
Practices
Beliefs
Mindset
Approaches
Pace
Commitment
Partnerships
Planning
Process
Strategy
Priorities
Focus
Problem solving
Perseverance
Ability to receive feedback
Learning
Time management
Communication
You might also consider tackling a particular area of your life like:
Finances
Relationships
Health
Once you have identified an area, begin by dedicating time to it and monitoring what happens when you do it. This will allow you to determine if your new efforts are yielding the results you desire.

Be aware! You may experience difficulty or discomfort, as you try something new. This is the nature of growth. The work of growing is called “growing pains” for a reason. Growth is often accompanied by negative emotions like:
Dissonance
Anxiety
Uncertainty
Grief
Fear
While uncomfortable, these emotions are not indicative of the value of trying something new. They are merely an indication that you are growing in a new way. You experience dissonance when your new life or choices are inconsistent with what you have known to be true. Maybe you told yourself that nothing is possible and then you discovered through your new choices that many more things are possible.
You experience anxiety and uncertainty when you are trying new things because you have never experienced the results of your new choices. Moreover, it can be common to experience grief when trying something new because you are losing your old practices and outcomes as well as the certainty or stability that came with them no matter how deleterious they were. Don’t be deterred. Losing bad results for better results is good! Lastly, if you try something new and it does not result in the impact you desire, do not be discouraged. Try something new until you find the thing for you! Connect With Tiffany www.sherisesstudios.com/tiffanytyler
