Melissa Swonger’s work lives at the intersection of pain and possibility where trauma meets transformation, and brokenness becomes the birthplace of something new. As a trauma-informed coach, qualitative researcher, author, and speaker, she has dedicated her life to helping others reclaim their stories, their voices, and ultimately, their lives. Her approach is not rooted in surface-level solutions, but in deep, intentional healing that honors both the complexity of human experience and the resilience of the human spirit.

Currently a Ph.D. candidate in Psychology, Melissa brings a rare blend of lived experience and academic rigor to her work. She explores the intricate relationship between trauma, identity, leadership, and spiritual renewal, offering insight that is both intellectually grounded and deeply human. Her work is especially meaningful for those navigating chronic stress, emotional pain, and identity fragmentation individuals who often feel unseen, unheard, or unsure of how to move forward. Through her guidance, they are offered not just hope, but tangible tools for rebuilding.

At the heart of Melissa’s mission is The Sage Hill Project, a movement she founded to mobilize radical kindness rooted in both psychological and spiritual restoration. This initiative reflects her belief that healing is not meant to happen in isolation, but within communities that foster compassion, accountability, and growth. Through coaching, teaching, and storytelling, she creates spaces where individuals can move beyond survival mode and step into what she calls “embodied wholeness” a state of living where authenticity, resilience, and purpose coexist.

Melissa’s approach is distinctly trauma-informed, integrating evidence-based methodologies with faith-anchored insight and leadership development. This multidimensional framework allows her to meet people where they are while guiding them toward sustainable transformation. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, she addresses the deeper narratives and patterns that shape behavior, empowering individuals to reclaim agency over their lives.

Her academic journey reflects this same commitment to meaningful impact. Melissa holds a Master’s degree in Leadership from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Kansas, and an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Evidence-Based Coaching from Fielding University.

As she completes her doctoral research at Adler University, she is focused on a constructivist grounded theory approach that seeks to bridge the gap between formal and informal culture. By leveraging informal leadership, her work aims to create greater parity among marginalized groups and a forward-thinking framework with the potential to be applied across industries and communities.

Central to Melissa’s philosophy is the concept of narrative integrity, the belief that understanding and owning one’s story is a powerful catalyst for change. She helps individuals recognize that their experiences, no matter how painful, are not liabilities but sources of strength and wisdom. This perspective is woven throughout her writing, speaking, and mentorship, offering a transformative lens through which people can view their past and reimagine their future.

Melissa’s voice also extends into the literary world. She is a contributing author to the upcoming collaborative works Herstory and The Rise of Her, both of which highlight the resilience, strength, and evolving voices of women. In addition, she is the author of the forthcoming memoir and devotional narrative, Whom He Raised. This deeply personal work chronicles her own journey through suffering and spiritual awakening, capturing what she describes as a movement from death to calling to witness. It is both a testimony and an invitation for readers to explore their own capacity for renewal.

Across all of her work, Melissa weaves together psychology, theology, and personal truth, creating a narrative that is both grounded and uplifting. She speaks openly about the balance between negative and positive emotional attractor spaces, acknowledging that growth often requires confronting discomfort while also cultivating hope. This balance allows her to guide others through the complexities of healing without minimizing the reality of their pain.

Her impact reaches a diverse audience, including trauma survivors, women in leadership, faith-based professionals, and individuals seeking to rebuild after burnout, betrayal, or personal loss. Whether she is speaking on stage, writing, or working one-on-one, Melissa is known for her clarity, compassion, and courageous authenticity. She does not shy away from hard truths, but she delivers them with a sense of grace and possibility that inspires action.

Through The Sage Hill Project, Melissa also envisions broader systems of care that extend beyond individual transformation. She is passionate about nonprofit innovation and the use of storytelling as a tool for justice and healing. Her work challenges conventional approaches, encouraging communities to rethink how support, leadership, and restoration are cultivated.

Melissa’s journey has been shaped by decades of navigating physical injury, emotional recovery, spiritual formation, and cultural change. These experiences have not only informed her work but have given her a depth of understanding that cannot be taught alone. With humility and grit, she carries forward a message that resonates across all she does: what once threatened to destroy you may become the very place from which you rise.

Her belief in restoration is unwavering.

Rooted in faith, she speaks of a God who restores, the transformative power of radical forgiveness, and the enduring strength found in fierce love and bold kindness. Above all, Melissa Swonger’s work is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the profound truth that even in the darkest moments, renewal is possible.
