Menopause in the Workplace: Honoring the Natural Cycle for Empowered Leadership

by Kylye Ralston

Menopause is often seen as a daunting transition—one marked by physical changes, emotional shifts, and a sense of uncertainty. But what if we flipped that script? What if menopause wasn’t the end of a chapter, but the start of a new one—one filled with empowerment, leadership, and transformation?

Though difficult, menopause is a transition. Like puberty, it’s a temporary phase that leads to something more powerful on the other side. Much like stepping into womanhood, menopause marks a new beginning, where women can emerge with renewed strength and wisdom.

Menopause isn’t something to just "get through." It can be a moment of release, unraveling the stresses, pain, and silence that many have carried. It’s about redefining who we are—reclaiming our voice, stepping into our power, and realizing that our best years are still ahead. It's also a time to connect with something bigger than ourselves. As we move through this phase of life, we are reminded of the natural cycle we are part of—a deeper meaning that calls us to reflect on our purpose and legacy.

Despite how common menopause is, it remains a silent subject in many workplaces. Women often feel they must hide their experiences, fearing judgment. But this silence isn’t just personal—it impacts workplaces, relationships, and communities. Today, life and work are no longer separate for many of us. The environments where we spend our time need to foster psychological safety—spaces where the natural phases of our lives, including menopause, are honored and embraced.

More women than ever are seeking leadership roles in their 40s and 50s. But without support, 1 in 10 women leave the workforce due to menopause symptoms, and 25% consider leaving. By creating cultures that value openness and understanding around menopause, we foster environments where women can thrive and contribute fully—not despite menopause, but in partnership with it. We are natural beings going through a natural cycle, and our professional environments should reflect this.

Menopause isn’t just a physical journey—it’s emotional, mental, and spiritual. It’s about stepping into roles that contribute to the world in meaningful ways. This phase of life is where many women find their deepest purpose. The resilience that emerges leads to transformations, not just for ourselves, but for the communities we touch.

The journey through menopause is one of transformation and resilience. It’s a chance for every woman to redefine her life on her own terms. When we embrace this natural cycle, in both personal lives and workplaces, we create a future where women feel empowered to lead, to be seen, and to be heard.

This is the mission I’ve dedicated my work to: ensuring that women everywhere are supported in this phase of life and that workplaces understand the importance of creating cultures of psychological safety. Together, we can ensure no woman feels alone in this journey.
