She stormed into my office as if it were a raid, pacing like a caged feline ripped from her young and ready to tear me apart with her teeth. It wasn’t me she was after. It wasn’t even him, though they often think it is. They think, understandably so – that something horrific was done to them. Betrayal. Abandonment. Abuse. Yes, something unimaginable happened. Illness. Bankruptcy. Death.
Two furious minutes she circled the room chanting curses that could have started a séance. She was calling on the gods of justice, but no knightly ghosts on haunted white stallions appeared. No one was coming to rescue her.
Her rant rid her of her craze. She was soaked in sweat piss. She collapsed into my leopard cushioned chair, swaying a self-soothing tick. If she were once a woman admired, now she was a ragged wretch. No one would want her now.
She went limp, her bones turned to sand. She mumbled and murmured nonsense, gibberish noise. We made no eye contact. She wasn’t ready.
We sat. Hours went by between us. Quiet brought softness. The anger didn’t leave, but the rage did. She lunged onto my desk holding her head with her fingertips. I stared at the strands of gray roots sprouting down the middle of her head, revealing that she was in the middle of her life, that was just beginning.
I looked her in the eyes, reminding her where she had been. She couldn’t remember, but I was relentless. It’s not that she had no memory. She was afraid to be brave. And alone.
I shook her shoulders, trying to rattle her out of her stupor. She wasn’t dumb. She wasn’t a fool. She was just acting like it. She didn’t want the reality she was in. She wanted what she had, even if there were lies, deception and abuse. At least she knew what to expect. And she wasn’t alone.
That life was over. It did her a favor and died on its own.
Most people spend their lives waiting to be saved from what broke them. But no one is coming. Truth is – no one should. You choose: Will you stay in the life that died long ago? Or will you finally become who you were meant to be?
She stood. Cocked her head, catching herself in my mirror - knowing what we now had to do.
