Returning to Source: A Journey of Inner Healing

By Dr Reetu Verma If you had told me years ago that healing would become one of the most defining journeys of my life, I would never have believed you. Back then, healing meant recovering from minor wounds, mending a fracture, or bouncing back from life’s knocks. I didn’t realise healing had layers—physical, emotional, energetic, and spiritual—and that one day I would be forced to face all of them at once.

My healing journey didn’t start in a calm and peaceful setting — it began in a Canadian hospital, right in the middle of my dream holiday, with a life-threatening brain injury. In that moment of crisis, I also experienced a near-death moment—one that shook me awake and changed me forever. Time felt suspended. The noise around me faded. I felt myself hovering between two worlds: the physical one I was familiar with, and another that was serene, vast, and radiantly lit. It was as life had hit pause and whispered, this is your turning point.

That experience stripped everything down to the truth. All the external noise—roles, expectations, stress—fell away, and what remained was the undeniable realisation that my life needed deep healing on every level. My brain and body were struggling, but beneath that were the invisible wounds—emotional, energetic, and spiritual—that I had been carrying for far too long.

That moment was the beginning of coming home to my original self, realigning with source—not because I chose it, but because I was called to it.

Breaking Free from Autopilot

As I slowly recovered, I realised healing wasn’t about adding more to my life—it was about unlearning. I had spent years operating on autopilot, shaped by responsibilities, pressure, emotional patterns, and old beliefs that no longer served me.

Healing brought me face-to-face with a harsh reality — I wasn’t merely unwell. My severe brain injury left my body immobile and I was profoundly disconnected from myself.

Disconnected from my body’s cries for help. Disconnected from my thoughts and emotions.

Disconnected from the inner light that once showed me the way.

The realisation hit me hard – I'd been going through life unconsciously, disconnected from myself, and silencing my inner voice so long I'd forgotten what it sounded like. Unlearning patterns was like riding a wave, ebbing and flowing between gentle insights and confronting awakenings. With every unlearned pattern, a new awakening emerged, and I began to rediscover the depths of who I truly am.

Awakening That Changed Everything

Amidst the turmoil of recovery, a profound truth revealed itself: We are spiritual beings having a human experience. This wasn't a philosophical concept I'd read about; it was a deep understanding that emerged during my near-death experience. It completely transformed my perspective on life. I came to see that we are beings of energy—and when that energy falls out of balance, life itself feels out of harmony. The realisation dawned: healing wasn't about fixing a broken me; it was about reconnecting with the source within — where calm, clarity, and wisdom reside. That was when it became clear: I wasn’t broken or unwell; I was simply disconnected!

Three Keys to Inner Balance

My healing journey was deeply spiritual and deeply practical. Three practices kept me grounded and restored my balance:

1. Chakra Healing

Working on my chakras helped me understand where energy was stagnant/blocked. It became a powerful tool for emotional release and nervous system regulation.

2. Sitting in Stillness

Stillness became my medicine. It wasn’t easy—my mind resisted and my emotions surfaced—but in the quiet, I began hearing my inner guidance - that whisper became my compass. 3. Honouring My Energy

I started paying attention to how people, environments, and habits affected my energy. If something drained me, I stepped back. If something expanded me, I leaned in. I finally allowed my energy—not obligations—to lead the way.

Return to the Source of Wholeness

Healing, for me, has been a journey of rediscovery – a return to the self I'd lost beneath layers of noise and stress. Beneath the pain and chaos, I've found a self-that’s whole, intuitive, and deeply connected. My return to source began on a hospital bed, far from home, in a moment that could have been my last. But perhaps that is why it was so powerful. Life gave me a second chance—and an invitation to return to who I truly am.

And if my journey has taught me anything, it’s this:
