ReVoicing the Future: A New Harmonic Structure for Women in Music

In music theory, to revoice a chord is to rearrange its notes. Essentially, you are shifting which note is designated as the root, thereby transforming how the chord feels and sounds without changing its identity. That is the heart of ReVoicing the Future, a Women of NAMM podcast. In an industry still largely male-dominated, women’s voices are too often placed anywhere but at the root or a seat at the table. This podcast changes that. Since the very beginning, it aims to learn from and celebrate the voices of women who make up the music industry, who have earned their time to be at the root of the chord, to help build an industry with more equitable gender representation.Â
The podcast is a passion project between a trio of industry friends, including myself, Natalie Morrison, Stephanie Lamond, and Julia Olsen. In March 2020, as the world began to shift due to the pandemic, and Women of NAMM’s previously in-person programming went on pause, I reached out to Stephanie with a wild idea: to create a podcast that could serve as a digital tool for women in the music products industry. We saw a gap that we could authentically fill and a way to foster community through digital storytelling.
Now, five years and almost 70 interviews later, ReVoicing the Future continues to provide that platform, giving women, many of whom have mostly never had the opportunity to tell their story, a place that can inspire others.
I’ve always believed podcasts could build community. I’ve experienced it myself, through connecting and finding some dear friends through podcast meetups. As Stephanie, Julia, and I reflect on the early years, we see firsthand the same thing happening within our own industry.
Â
We see this project as something bigger than ourselves. We’ve been fortunate to grow up in an industry with strong women leaders who have paved a path for us coming up behind them. And we recognize that this experience is rare for most. With our experience, we felt an obligation to use our platform to amplify the stories of the women who make up the industry.Â

The music products industry is unique in that it is a mosaic of micro-communities, each connected by a shared love for music from pro audio to lighting to band and orchestra, guitar, percussion, education, nonprofits, and more. For women seeking community within the industry, the trio of Stephanie, Julia, and me discovered that, within the microcosms, there were avenues for women to grow in these dedicated spaces.
One of the best moments throughout this journey was our session at The NAMM Show in 2024: Creating Sustainable Careers Through Community. The goal of the session was to explore not just why and how to find your community, but also to spotlight the many organizations supporting women across the industry. The event became a place where community building could happen in real time with organizations including Women in Music, Women’s Audio Mission, Girls Make Beats, She Q Audio, Gritty in Pink, The Women’s International Music Network, and more. For the ReVoicing the Future team, the event felt like a defining moment. Looking around the room, we saw years of work materializing, bringing the right people, leaders, and organizations together in pursuit of one common goal: more equitable gender representation.
ReVoicing the Future’s impact comes directly from our listeners and the women we feature.
Through the years, guests have shared that listeners reached out to them after episodes aired, connections that helped elevate careers, spark new opportunities, and reinforce the power of visibility and representation. ReVoicing the Future has become a catalyst for inspiration and progress, simply by ensuring women have the seat and the spotlight they deserve. What we love the most is that there is something for everyone.Â
Every story is different, and every piece of advice or experience hits you differently, no matter who you are. We truly are ReVoicing the Future, one interval at a time.Â
