Set Boundaries to Enhance Leadership Effectiveness

I learned the hard way that trying to please everyone doesn't work. Early in my career, I agreed to everything: extra patience, last-minute appointments, and constant obligations. I felt this made me a good leader. In reality, it drained me, drained my attention, and rendered me ineffective.

Leadership is not about doing more; it's about doing the right things better. I began setting boundaries. I no longer overcommit. I allowed my staff to handle tasks that did not require my presence. That decision improved my focus, eliminated inefficiencies in patient care, and enabled my staff to develop because they could trust me.

One example is telling. Previously, I would personally address every concern parents would bring, no matter how minor. It took up my time and energy. By training my staff to handle these conversations, I have liberated myself to concentrate on the complex cases that need my attention. The transition strengthened the practice and built a more solid, capable team.

That lesson shaped the leader I am today. It taught me that resilience comes from intentional choices, knowing your limits, and allowing others to succeed.
