Success Isn’t a Straight Line: Lessons I Learned Building a Business and a Life of Purpose

Many people believe successful entrepreneurs had a clear plan from the beginning. They imagine a straight path marked by certainty, confidence, and carefully calculated decisions. My experience has taught me something very different.

Success isn’t a straight line.

It’s a series of pivots, setbacks, lessons, opportunities, and moments when you choose to keep going even when the outcome is uncertain.

If someone had told me years ago that I would become a business owner, nonprofit founder, speaker, bestselling author, and earn a PhD, I probably would have smiled politely and changed the subject. At the time, I was simply focused on doing the next right thing for myself and my family.

My journey began with a GED and a determination to create a better future. Along the way, I became a mother, navigated personal challenges, pursued higher education, built a career, and eventually stepped into entrepreneurship. None of it happened overnight. None of it happened exactly as planned.

What I learned is that success is rarely about having all the answers. More often, it’s about having the courage to take the next step.

One of the most important lessons I learned is that your starting point does not determine your destination.

Too often, people disqualify themselves because of where they come from, mistakes they’ve made, or opportunities they didn’t have. I know what it’s like to question whether you’re qualified enough, experienced enough, or capable enough. But I’ve learned that growth happens when you stop focusing on where you started and begin focusing on where you’re going.

Every achievement in my life began with a decision to keep moving forward.

Another lesson that transformed my perspective is that setbacks are not signs to quit. They are opportunities to learn.

There were seasons when things didn’t go according to plan. Opportunities fell through. Doors closed. Plans had to be adjusted. In those moments, it was tempting to view obstacles as failures. Instead, I learned to view them as preparation.

Every challenge taught me something valuable about leadership, resilience, relationships, and business. Some lessons were expensive. Some were painful. But all of them contributed to the person and professional I am today.

I’ve also learned that credentials can open doors, but character keeps them open.

Education has played a significant role in my journey, and I am proud of every degree, certification, and accomplishment I’ve earned. However, the qualities that have had the greatest impact on my success aren’t listed on a résumé.

Integrity. Consistency. Compassion. Accountability.

These are the traits that build trust, strengthen relationships, and create lasting opportunities. People may initially notice your credentials, but they remember how you made them feel, how you treated others, and whether you followed through on your commitments.

Purpose is another factor that has sustained me through difficult seasons.

Motivation comes and goes. Excitement fades. Challenges arise. But purpose creates endurance.

When your work is connected to something greater than yourself, it becomes easier to persevere when circumstances become difficult. My purpose has always been rooted in serving others, creating opportunities, and helping people build healthier, more stable lives. That purpose has carried me through moments when giving up would have been easier.

Finally, I’ve learned that true success is not measured solely by what you achieve. It’s measured by how many people you help along the way.

One of the greatest joys of leadership and entrepreneurship is creating opportunities for others. Whether through mentoring, community service, advocacy, business development, or simply sharing lessons learned, I believe we have a responsibility to lift others as we rise.

Success becomes far more meaningful when it extends beyond personal accomplishments and creates positive change in the lives of others.

Looking back, I can see that every chapter of my journey served a purpose. The challenges, the detours, the victories, and even the disappointments all contributed to the path I’m walking today.

If there’s one message I hope readers take away from my story, it’s this:

You do not need a perfect plan to create a meaningful life.

You do not need to have every answer before you begin.

You do not need to wait until you feel completely ready.

Start where you are. Use what you have. Learn as you grow. Keep moving forward.

Success isn’t a straight line. It’s a journey of persistence, purpose, and faith. And sometimes, the most remarkable outcomes come from simply refusing to quit.
