Synergy of Vitality: Unlocking Energy Management for Longevity and Everyday Wellness

A daily habit that most improves vitality is recognizing that time management is important, but not nearly as crucial as energy management. The concept of energy management is often used in optimizing energy use in buildings. I commonly use this concept with my clients and in my masterclasses to explain why human energy management is key to optimal functioning and achievement.

This can be easily seen as the New Year approaches and many people will create resolutions to accomplish. One resolution I’ve witnessed quite often is the commitment to join a gym and commence to a regimen of physical fitness. It’s estimated that about 80-90% fail regardless of the resolution. This is so common that some studies have coined the term “Quitters Day” (mid-January) as the time most give up.

What happens here? We all have 24 hours in a day. Many of us have similar categorical stressors related to our job and families. I believe the 9-10% who achieve this particular resolution do so because they allocate the appropriate energy for the task at hand.

Just think of some of the common excuses…I don’t have enough time at the end of my day. Well, we have already established that we all get the same amount of time in a day. Dwayne Johnson does not get extra hours because he is “The Rock,” nor does Beyoncé because she is…Beyoncé.

“The quit” often boils down to being too tired when all my other obligations are met. Energy management is simply pacing yourself and conserving your energy stores for all that matters to you. I often think about individuals who do not monitor their energy expenditures throughout the workday and come home to their loved ones exhausted and emotionally unavailable. The concept of energy management for human beings has the possibility to save lives and relationships.

Human energy is managed by knowing your emotional thresholds or when you feel your energy running low. It’s analogous to cellphone behavior whereby the battery often gets low, and many of us recharge it before it becomes inoperable.

It’s also important to consider how much energy various tasks and obligations will require, as well as how much energy you plan to allocate to these tasks while considering other commitments throughout your day.

A huge wellness myth to consider when attempting to engage in the concept of energy management is the concept of life balance. True “balance” is an illusion. Most of us do not spend the same amount of time or commitment to the routine and daily activities in our lives.

Although it’s great to talk about the ratios and percentages, it’s rarely correct. Life always keeps life-ing. As unforeseen events and circumstances arise, we must adjust our delegated proportions to meet the present demands of life.

So instead of life balance, I’d like to suggest life harmony. This creates much less cognitive dissonance, and it basically comes down to doing what works – for you!
