The Most Overlooked Innovation Opportunity Is Sitting Next to Your Modem

Ask anyone where innovation is happening right now and you'll get the same three answers: AI, AI, and AI. Maybe someone mentions biotech. Nobody says hardware routers.
That's exactly why I want to talk about routers.
While the industry chases model releases, a quieter problem has been compounding for years, and almost nobody is building for it. Millions of people now live and work across borders, but the internet still assumes everyone stays home. The gap between how people actually live and how the network treats them is one of the most overlooked innovation opportunities of this decade. And the answer, I've become convinced, isn't more software. It's hardware.
The problem hiding in plain sight
Here's what happens when a remote worker crosses a border. Their bank sees a foreign IP address and freezes the account, sometimes mid-payment. Their employer's compliance systems flag them, because many companies restrict which countries staff can work from. Their streaming subscriptions shrink overnight. Their two-factor codes route to services that suddenly treat them as a fraud risk.
None of this is hypothetical. It's the daily background anxiety of expats, digital nomads, military and diplomatic families, and retirees who spend winters abroad. They aren't doing anything wrong. They're just physically somewhere the internet didn't expect.
The market's default answer has been the software VPN, and the software VPN is failing them. Commercial VPN exit addresses are shared by thousands of users, which makes them trivially easy to detect and block. Banks blacklist them. Streaming platforms wage continuous war on them. Connections drop at the worst moments, and when a VPN app silently disconnects, your real location leaks instantly. People pay monthly for a tool that works right up until they genuinely depend on it.
Why the fix is physical
The overlooked insight is that location privacy is a network-layer problem, and network-layer problems are best solved at the network layer, not in an app fighting for survival on top of an operating system.
A small physical device that sits between the user and the internet changes the equation entirely. Instead of borrowing a shared, flagged address from a VPN company, it routes traffic through the user's own home connection. One unit stays at home. A second travels with them. To every bank, employer system, and streaming service, the user never left. It's their own residential address, shared with nobody, indistinguishable from them sitting on their couch, because in every way that matters to the network, they are.
This approach wins on the three points where software VPNs lose. Detection: a residential home address doesn't appear on any blacklist, because it's genuinely residential.
Reliability: hardware routing has no app to crash and no operating system update to break it. Coverage: it protects every device that connects to it, including the smart TVs, tablets, and work laptops that can't run VPN clients at all.

The underlying technology has existed in open-source networking communities for years. The innovation wasn't inventing it. It was noticing that ordinary people needed it and packaging it so they could actually use it.
Why everyone missed it
Three reasons, and each one is instructive for anyone hunting overlooked opportunities.
First, hardware is unfashionable. Investors and founders gravitate to software margins and AI narratives. A physical box with inventory and shipping costs looks like the past. But unfashionable is where uncontested markets live.
Second, the customer doesn't look like a tech early adopter. The people who need this most are a retired couple in Spain, a consultant posted abroad, a military spouse. They don't write viral threads about their problems. They quietly lose access to their own bank accounts and assume it's their fault.
Third, the problem grew gradually. Remote work went mainstream, fraud detection got more aggressive, and geo-restrictions multiplied, each in small increments. There was never a single headline moment. Slow-burn problems get ignored longer, which means they compound into bigger markets before anyone builds for them.
Where this goes next
The physical privacy layer is still early, and the trajectory is clear.
Fraud detection systems are increasingly machine-learning driven, and they're getting better at spotting anything that isn't genuine residential traffic. Every improvement in detection widens the gap between shared VPN infrastructure and a real home connection. The industry will apply intelligent optimization to routing and network management too, and the same trend helps hardware-based approaches: the smarter the scrutiny, the more authenticity wins. That is a structural advantage that strengthens over time, which is the kind you want to build on.
I'd push the observation further than my own product. The pattern generalizes: whenever daily life changes faster than infrastructure, the gap fills first with awkward software workarounds, and the durable opportunity belongs to whoever rebuilds the underlying layer. Remote work changed where people live. The network layer hasn't caught up. That's the opening.
So while everyone watches the AI race, take a second look at the unglamorous box next to your modem. The most overlooked innovation opportunity isn't in the cloud. It's on the shelf, plugged into the wall, quietly deciding whether the internet believes you're home.
