In the depths of despair, I found myself on my knees, overwhelmed by the pain and grief of losing my children through Family Court and the aftermath of years of abuse from my soon-to-be ex-husband. In that moment of vulnerability, there was no plan, only a prayer for hope and guidance. Soon after, an undeniable pull to reclaim my voice rose from within me. Despite having paid my attorney $28,000, I made the bold decision to let him go, realizing I could no longer allow someone else to speak for me. Becoming the advocate I had once so desperately needed felt like the only path forward. Rather than hiring another lawyer, I chose a different route entirely, and applied to law school. That single, radical choice marked the beginning of a powerful transformation, not just from loss, but into a profound sense of purpose.
I once believed that being “unstoppable” meant pushing through pain and wearing resilience like armor. But my journey revealed a deeper truth. Real strength comes from being rooted and trusting your inner voice. It is a soft power, a steady power, a soul power. Each day, I remind myself to stay in flow and to soften when the weight of the world feels too heavy.
To the version of myself who almost lost all hope, I would say: “Sweet girl, I see you. I know you’re exhausted, and it feels as though no one is coming to rescue you. But remember, you are the one you’ve been waiting for. The pain you feel now is not the end. It is the gateway to everything you are destined to become. Stand tall when you're ready. The world needs your voice.”
I was forced to confront the devastating possibility of spending 14 years in prison, falsely accused of four felony charges by my ex-husband. Until the criminal case was resolved, my children were taken away to live with him. I was completely innocent. Ironically, I found more rights in criminal court, where the presumption of innocence applied, than in Family Court, where guilt seemed to be assumed from the beginning.
One hearing remains etched in my memory: January 28, 2021. It was the anniversary of my mother’s death and the day I stood face-to-face with a system determined to imprison me. But this time, I was no longer relying on someone else to tell my story. I had already made the decision to stand in my truth. Firing my attorney had been a turning point, and that choice gave me the strength to declare my plea in court: “Innocent.” Although my words were dismissed, I remained unshaken. They could ignore my plea, but they could not change my truth. My mother’s strength surged within me, reminding me of the fight I was capable of waging.
That day, I prayed not only for justice, but also for divine protection. I called upon my spiritual guides and ancestors. Through countless hearings and setbacks, I discovered that the path to justice was filled with obstacles, yet it also offered moments to stand fully in my truth. Later in the proceedings, when a forensic psychologist submitted a contradictory report claiming I was incompetent, it reaffirmed my decision to stand in my truth and continue alone. That realization was terrifying, but it was also liberating.
The courtroom became a battleground, and my resolve only grew stronger. After 283 court hearings, I fought relentlessly for both my freedom and my innocence. It took tremendous courage to face the judge and speak the truth. In doing so, I was transformed. I became a warrior for my own cause and an advocate for others who feel powerless within the system.
To anyone who feels trapped in an unjust or oppressive system, I offer these three guiding truths:
Know Your Rights: Empower yourself through knowledge. Understand your legal rights and reach out for support when needed. Education is your first line of defense against manipulation.
Arm Yourself with Faith: Spiritual strength can be your greatest ally. Meditate on empowering scriptures or spiritual texts that uplift you. Let them guide you through even the darkest moments.
Stand in Your Truth: Embrace your identity and the power it carries. It takes great courage to stand your ground, but your truth is your armor. Use it. Your voice matters.
My courtroom battles became a deeply personal triumph, one born of personal transformation and deep courage. They stand as a testament to the strength it takes to refuse silence. Every act of truth-telling has the potential to spark change, lighting the way for others who feel voiceless and reminding us all that one voice can make a difference.
This is more than my story, it is a call to action. Each of us has the power to rise, to speak truth, and to reclaim what was once lost. As we lift ourselves, we create space for others to rise too. Let your healing become a revolution. Let your voice become a light. The road ahead may not be easy, but it is ours to walk, together, with courage, compassion, and faith.
