The Power of Pivoting: From C-Suite to Entrepreneurship at 55. How I turned an unexpected ending into the most intentional chapter of my career

At 55, I lost my seat in the C-suite.
One day, I was signing off on multimillion-dollar strategies; the next, I was packing up my office, staring down the quiet hum of uncertainty. And I was scared. I was a single, empty nester, suddenly faced with the daunting reality of finding another executive role, likely requiring relocation—or figuring out who I was without one. I have worked since I was 14 years old. For the first time in my life, I didn’t know what to do next.
But here’s the truth: while losing my role was painful, it wasn’t paralyzing. Because nine months before that unexpected exit, I had already begun to future-proof myself.
Future-Proofing While Employed
Most professionals—especially women—don’t think about their “what’s next” until they’re forced to. We’re too busy performing, producing, and proving—raising families, leading teams, and managing life’s daily demands. Yet research consistently shows that waiting to be “tapped” for opportunity leaves us restless, reactive, and unprepared for inevitable change.

Had I not laid that groundwork, I don’t believe I would have taken the leap. I had only ever known the perceived safety of corporate life. But the research—and the discipline of Now, Near, Next—gave me both confidence and conviction to pivot.

The 7-Minute Pivot: A Daily Practice
Out of that experience came one of the most practical habits I now teach: The 7-Minute Pivot.
Each day, I set aside seven minutes to ask myself: What’s standing in the way of my Next? Then, I take one small, intentional action to move closer to it.
Seven minutes isn’t long enough to overwhelm you, but it’s powerful enough to compound over time. One day, that action might be reaching out to a mentor, another, sketching the outline of a personal vision statement. The point isn’t perfection—it’s progress.

Over time, those small acts accumulate into a body of work—and a sense of agency—that can weather any transition.
