The Three MinuteDifference!

For more than 25 years, I have worked with older adults, helping people improve their strength, balance, confidence and mobility. During that time, I noticed something important. Most people don’t struggle because they don’t understand that movement is good for them. They struggle because the advice they are given often doesn’t fit real life.

We are told to exercise for 30 minutes five times a week, join a gym or follow a programme, but in my experience, the challenge for many people is finding a way to make it fit into everyday life. Let’s be honest. By the time you’ve remembered where you left your glasses, fed the dog and made a cup of tea, the thought of a 30-minute workout can feel about as appealing as assembling flat-pack furniture without the instructions!

Over the years, I began to wonder if we were asking the wrong question. Instead of asking, “How do we get people to exercise more?”, perhaps we should be asking, “How do we help people move more often?” That simple shift in thinking led me to create The 3-20 Way and set me on a mission to change the conversation from fitness to independence. Because as we age, how we live matters far more than how we look!

The idea is simple. What if just three minutes of purposeful movement could help improve strength, balance and mobility? What if movement became something that fitted into your day instead of something you had to make time for? What if three minutes, four or five times a day, had the same impact as thirty minutes in the gym?

Just three minutes?

Working with thousands of older adults, including people in their seventies, eighties and nineties, I have seen the difference that small, consistent actions can make when repeated day after day:

Standing up from a chair a few extra times.

Practising balance while waiting for the kettle to boil.

Improving flexibility before getting dressed.

Simple movements. Small moments. Real results.

I call them “Movement Moments” because movement doesn’t have to be treated as a separate event. It can become part of your daily routine, as natural as brushing your teeth or switching on the coffee machine.

What concerns me today is that many people are overwhelmed by conflicting health and fitness messages. Social media is full of extreme transformations, miracle cures and people who seem to have unlimited time and energy. For many older adults, that world feels intimidating, unrealistic or simply unachievable. The good news is that movement doesn’t have to be complicated. Our bodies are designed to move, and small amounts of purposeful movement can make a remarkable difference.

My mission is to help people understand that staying active isn’t really about fitness. It’s about protecting independence — climbing stairs with confidence, carrying groceries, getting up from the floor, walking without fear of falling and keeping up with grandchildren.

It’s about continuing to do the things you love.

Every person deserves the opportunity to maintain their confidence, capability and independence for as long as possible. Because when it comes to healthy ageing, the little things done consistently make the biggest difference.

That’s The Three Minute Difference.
