What does it mean to have a voice? It is not just about being vocal. It is about knowing and speaking your truth. It’s knowing your identity and living it. It is having a presence that is noticed and respected. When a woman finds her voice, she finds her freedom. She finds the strength to be who she was created to be.
Many women struggle with being heard. Sometimes the struggle is both internal and external. The struggle can be caused by a negative self-perception or from external influences that don’t understand why you are you. If this is you, this is your call to action to reclaim and project your voice.
The Power of a Woman’s Voice
Your voice reflects your self-awareness, values, truth, and leadership. For this to be true, you must have a strong sense of self. Knowing self can be a fulfilling journey of discovery, especially if you have never taken this journey on your own. Start at the beginning. Discover your natural talents and abilities. Discover what it is you like and desire. Discover what brings you joy.
Your voice will influence your relationships, workplace, family, and community. You can make a difference in how decisions are made and what outcomes are reached. You can bring joy to others. Breaking your silence will enhance your life as well as the life of others.
When You Feel Voiceless
Some women may lose or never find their voice. Causes can be fear, trauma, rejection and/or conditioning. Many women are told to keep quiet because of the way they appear when sharing their voice. They could have experienced a bad outcome from speaking up and speaking out. Many women are conditioned from a young age to believe their voice is not as valuable as a man’s.
You may be living a voiceless life if you over-apologize, struggle with self-doubt, demonstrate indecisiveness or choose to remain silent. Be honest when assessing yourself. It is important to know that you can rediscover or develop your voice at any stage in life. Just decide to do it and then do it!
How to Find Your Voice
Some women experience an uncomfortable feeling when trying to find and use their voice.
Here are some tips to try (and share with other women) to reconnect with your voice:
Reflect on who you are. That includes your values, strengths and passion.
Journal your feelings to help you discover your truth.
Speak affirmations daily.
Pray and/ or meditate daily, seeking a sense of self.
Use your story. There’s power in your lived experiences.
Surround yourself with people who support your growth.
These are some things you can do to help you find your voice. Seek help if needed. A coach is a great place to start! Keep in mind that finding your voice is a journey, not a one time event.
Projecting Your Voice into the World
Once you’ve found your voice, what will you do with it? Don’t hesitate and wonder if you have value. You do because you are you! Use it to:
Speak up in meetings
Set boundaries when needed
Share ideas with others
Start something new
Be a leader where there is none
Be a role model for other women
Tell your story in a book, through video, social media or even on a stage
Be you! The world will be a better place because you chose to use your voice. Remember, the world needs the you that you were created to be!
