Women Deserve More Money!

What financial strategy helped you build stability or wealth?

The first financial strategy that helped me build stability and wealth is to hide money from myself by opening an online high-yield savings account (HYSA) at a separate bank from where I have my checking account. I would set up automatic transfers from my checking account into this separate HYSA and it would help me avoid impulse spending because it takes a few days to transfer the money back.

Another financial strategy that has helped me build stability and wealth is deciding to read personal finance books so that I could start investing.

Investing seemed like a really scary, big thing to start doing by myself, so I checked out a book from the library to start reading. It was so complicated and I fell asleep many times trying to get through that first book. The personal finance industry has historically been so "male, pale, and stale," and it was really hard for me to relate as a young woman of color. It felt like I would google something every other page at first, which eventually led me to YouTube videos about personal finance and then even podcasts or blogs. Thankfully, I started to find more interesting content about personal finance, which really helped me to keep learning more and eventually open my first investment account.

What money myths hold women back?

The biggest money myth I see holding women back is that women feel like money is too complicated for them and they let their husbands/partners, or even fathers, manage money for them or tell them what to do with their money. You are definitely capable of being smart with your money! It will take time to learn, just like any skill, but you can do it. I found it helpful to start looking for women to follow who were talking about money because I needed to see someone more like me, instead of just hearing the same ‘finance bro’ kind of content. I remember even googling things like “latina personal finance” because I wanted some role models to look up to - I am a big subscriber now of the idea that “you can’t be what you can’t see,” or at the very least, it makes it a lot easier to have a role model who you relate to.

How can women claim more economic power in 2026?

In 2026, I would love to see more women working on their money mindset to claim more economic power. The first step is believing that you deserve more money and that you can manage it well to build wealth.

Then you can really take action by saving and investing. If you’re unsure of where to start, I highly recommend looking for personal finance books for women like “Financially Lit! The Modern Latina's Guide to Level Up Your Dinero & Become Financially Poderosa” by Jannese Torres or “Money Out Loud: All the Financial Stuff No One Taught Us," by Berna Anat. They both have online content on YouTube/podcasts if you don’t feel like reading a book!
