Irreverent Warriors

Hello! My name is Julissa Uribe, and I am a United States Marine Corps veteran. I served 5 years and then got Honorably Discharged. I help coordinate hikes (rucks) in DFW, Texas for a nonprofit organization called “Irreverent Warriors”. The mission is of this organization is “We bring veterans together using humor and camaraderie to improve mental health and prevent veteran suicide.” I honestly felt like it was a blessing to stumbled across a fellow veterans page and seen she had attended a hike. I then looked up the organization and seen that it stood for something great. 

At that time, I had been going through life feeling worthless, depressed, and felt as if I had no purpose in life. I went to my very first hike in Fort Worth, Tx in April of 2021. It really helped change the course of my life for the better. I had an awesome experience and made a lot of new friends I call family. I fell in love with the organization and wanted to get more involved with the community. What better way than to continue to serve in a manner right? 

The organization is mainly for those mentioned above. Spouses, family members, friends, or any other loved ones are more than welcome to be volunteers at hikes. As long as they’re 18 and above. The day before the hikes is when we all get together and mingle at a “Meet & Greet”. It gives you the opportunity to mingle and get to know other, or revisit if you’ve already been to a hike. They’re usually family friendly for loved ones to attend as well. The hikes are no more than 8-9 miles and it’s an all day event. 7:30 is normally the registration time and step off is usually around 9. Hikes normally conclude at 4-5. Coffee and breakfast is provided, as well as lunch. At the end of the hikes, if you’re up for it, participants normally do post hike activities.
