Modern Beauty Perspectives

In my 25 years as a wedding makeup artist, I’ve seen beauty trends come and go, and I’m honestly relieved to see more brides stepping away from heavily trend-led makeup and focusing on looks that actually feel like them.

For a while, social media pushed a lot of “copy and paste” beauty — everyone chasing the same finishes, whether that was heavy contour, oversized lashes, or more recently the glass skin trend. It can look beautiful, but it also created a kind of sameness.

What I’m noticing now is that brides are taking more control back. They’re asking for makeup that fits their personality rather than whatever is trending at the time.

Some want soft, natural looks that enhance their features and still feel like them in real life and in photos. Others are going completely the opposite way — I’ve got gothic bridal looks coming up for a Friday the 13th wedding and a Halloween wedding, both using rich purples and dramatic styling that suit the bride’s personality rather than traditional bridal expectations.

And I think that’s the bigger shift happening in beauty. Confidence now comes from feeling like yourself, not from fitting into a single ideal. Whether it’s soft and minimal or bold and alternative, the most powerful makeup is always the one that feels authentic to the person wearing it.
