Staying Grounded in Gratitude

In 1996, Oprah Winfrey introduced the concept of a gratitude journal on her national talk show, emphasizing its transformative impact. Inspired by her advice to write down five things I was grateful for each day; I adopted the practice. At the time, I was a college student at UCLA, living in a small studio, working two jobs, and taking student loans to make it all work. Back then, there were many tough days for me but still I knew I was so lucky to be living that life. I always remained thankful.
Continuing with the gratitude journal, during challenging times. I started to notice quickly that grounding myself in gratitude, helped me remain focused on my values and maintain resilience.
Today, gratitude is integral to my mental wellness, self-care, and business success. Expressing appreciation and thanks in business—to clients, team members, partners, and mentors—is essential for long-term sustainability. In 23 years of business ownership, gratitude has helped me navigate difficulties and foster stronger relationships. Practicing genuine thankfulness is both grounding and opens the heart and mind.
In addition to Oprah, my mother instilled in me the importance of expressing thanks, not just as a matter of manners, but as a reflection of personal values. As an adult, I have come to see gratitude as a conscious choice that shapes how I lead, conduct business, and am remembered.

Business ownership can be isolating. You’re doing things alone, a lot. There are so many highs and lows. These are the moments when gratitude can show up and carry you through. On my company website, I share a founder’s letter so perspective clients and colleagues can get a small snapshot of my business ethos. Part of the last line reads; I stand in gratitude, embracing an inclusive approach that always starts with love… for people, great ideas, and the moments big and small that connect us.
It is never too late to embrace gratitude.
