Visit the Hidden Gem Country Bosnia!

by Dani Rosenblad James

My heart raced as I thought about my new journey ahead. It was a mix of feeling nervous and excited. Before heading on this trip, I hadn’t even investigated Bosnia. Sure, I knew about their rocky past. But since I had planned to come and help a tour company and I was busy writing my book, I had no urge to dig into more about the country. Since this was the case, I was blown away to find all the wonderful nature that’s spread out near Sarajevo. My jaw dropped and my heart was filled with such happiness.

Adventure to Bosnia

The mountains towered above and were covered in trees and vegetation. The river is a crystal-clear blue with a tint of turquoise to it. My heart bounced frantically in my chest. Bosnia Outdoor company led the way to Rafting Paradiso, where we would begin our rafting down the deepest canyon in Europe. Along with having our tour guide, my friend Arthur from Just Another Moment came with and the three of us bonded through our few days of adventures.

Go Rafting with Rafting Paradiso

The water was translucent, and I felt my heart had jumped into my throat. I had never gone rafting before, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. But as I talked with my friend, he calmed my nerves. The rough waters weren’t as bad as I had thought they would be, and I quickly learned that the water was 2 meters lower than usual for that time of the year. I was thankful yet disappointed all in one breath. That means that these rafts can be pretty intense! When we rafted, it took about 3-4 hours with a break. If the water was at the usual height, it would have taken 45 minutes!

After a long day in a wetsuit, helmet, wet shoes, and a life jacket, I was ready to relax. My body felt sluggish and since I’m a vegetarian, my options were limited. However, the locals’ friendly attitude helped me, and I had a nice salad with some delicious cheese. At Rafting Paradiso, they have a pool that gives you a scenery of the mountains behind it. There are tiny cabins on the other side that are cozy and welcoming along with rooms to rent that are above the restaurant. Plus, they have a little bit of a night life if you want to stay up, drink and enjoy the fire. I could see this place being the best spot to disconnect from the busy life and reconnect with yourself.

Climb Mount Maglic, The Tallest Mountain in Bosnia

The three of us camped at the base of the tallest mountain in Bosnia, which is called Maglic the night before and the views were spectacular! In the distance we could see a lookout tower and surrounding that was a magical view of shadowed mountains and the sky was in all different hues as the sun went down. My heart leapt as I took in every direction as though I was a little kid again, giddy with excitement. Since we were high up, the chilly breeze began to get colder and it was lucky that our tour guide was prepared for it.

The next day the three of us had breakfast with steaming tea. After that, we started our hike around 7am and began to take in all the beauty. The more we went up, the more I realized that this hike was mostly climbing than actual walking. We grabbed onto the rock formations and pushed forward trying not to look down as we ascended. My heart hammered from the exhilaration. But I could feel that I was starting to get hesitant. I grew worried about my head since I hadn’t done a hike like this for a long time. 10 years ago I had a traumatic brain injury which turned my life upside down.

I had to relearn how to walk, use my head, and just be a normal person again. I gulped down my fears and remembered how far I have come and all the things that I have accomplished. Finally after 8 hours of hiking, we made it to the top! Once I saw the flag, my heart came to life. Relief washed over me along with a feeling of accomplishment.
