Jessica Reid Sliwerski is a leader defined by resilience, purpose, and a fierce commitment to educational equity. Her journey from a fifth-grade classroom to co-founding Ignite Reading is a powerful testament to turning personal adversity into a massive force for social good, impacting the lives of tens of thousands of schoolchildren across the country.
From Shock to Spark: Finding Purpose in Adversity
Jessica’s life took an unexpected turn a decade ago. While navigating the demands of new motherhood, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. This news brought a heightened sense of urgency and purpose. As a former teacher, this personal battle reignited a deep and unwavering commitment she already held: to solve the critical crisis of childhood literacy.
This wasn't just professional; it was now deeply personal. This determination, paired with her own journey of hope and communication, led her to write "Cancer Hates Kisses," a book that helps parents explain cancer treatment to their young children, and is a powerful example of using clarity and empathy to navigate challenging times.
Early in her career, Jessica lacked the training to teach reading. She felt "utterly ill-equipped" in her fifth-grade classroom to help non-proficient students read—a failure that haunted her and spurred her commitment to solving the literacy crisis. In her third year, she was trained in evidence-based early literacy practices and her perspective and approach to reading shifted. Jessica firmly believes that reading by first grade is a foundational skill, essential for lifelong success and the alarming statistics surrounding literacy gaps further fueled her conviction.
Realizing that learning to read is a science and seeing her first-grade students succeed became the obsession that inspired the founding of Ignite Reading.
Ignite Reading: Blending Empathy with Business Savvy
Jessica channeled her renewed sense of mission into action with Ignite Reading. Her business acumen merged seamlessly with her empathetic approach, creating a scalable solution to a systemic problem. Ignite Reading is an early literacy intervention company working to end the reading crisis by ensuring every child in America learns to read on time—ideally by the end of first grade. Ignite strengthens foundational literacy outcomes and provides K-8 grade students with the support they need to master the fundamentals that lead to confident, fluent reading.
Under Jessica's determination and focused guidance, Ignite Reading has expanded rapidly, and to date, delivered over 28.5 million minutes of personalized instruction to more than 50,000 students nationwide. The organization’s mission is straightforward: to ensure that every child, regardless of background or circumstance, receives the support needed to learn to read on time. By leveraging technology, Ignite Reading reaches students wherever they are, delivering personalized instruction that ensures every kid learns to read.
Impact and Ensuring Equity
The true measure of a business dedicated to solving a crisis is its impact and Ignite Reading has delivered measurable success. Research conducted in 2024 by the Center for Research and Reform in Education at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) confirmed the program’s effectiveness. According to the JHU study, students who participated in one year of Ignite Reading’s virtual tutoring gained an additional 5.4 months of learning compared to national averages.

Crucially, this strong level of reading growth was realized across all student demographics, addressing the very equity crisis Jessica set out to solve. English language learners, students with IEPs, and Black and Hispanic students all showed significant progress. This data validates Jessica's vision: that combining personalized attention with scalable technology can quickly deliver positive educational outcomes.
Jessica Reid Sliwerski's journey demonstrates the transformative power of resilience. Her personal experience forged a leader with the empathy of an educator and the savvy of a visionary entrepreneur, empowering thousands of children to build lifelong reading skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
